Prince George Cougars News Release

PRINCE GEORGE, BC- The Prince George Cougars Hockey Club, in partnership with the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation and the Northern Health Authority, are excited to announce the regionalization of the Spirit of Healthy Kids (SOHK) School Program.

The SOHK School Program, which is sponsored by the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, is entering its fifth year. Since its inception over 18,000 students in Prince George have been exposed to the program.

"The Cougars are proud to be closely aligned with Northern Health & the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation," said Cougars' Vice President, Business Andy Beesley. "Through this partnership, our players have provided positive, effective, and measurable role modelling for thousands of local elementary school children."

This year the Cougars, the Northern Health Authority, and the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation are expanding the SOHK School Program to extend beyond Prince George and offer it to over 220 schools, which will reach over 33,000 students in the Northern Health region.

"Northern Health recognizes the value of the SOHK partnership, and we wanted to help take the program to the next stage," stated Northern Health Community Funding Programs Coordinator Andrew Steele. "By expanding to a regional program, we seek to share the benefits of healthy messaging and positive role models with children throughout Northern BC."

"On behalf of our donors who see this as a valuable way of instilling great values in health and wellness, education, community, and giving back we are pleased to see this program extended to the full region that our donors dollars serve," said Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation CEO Judy Neiser. "It's fantastic to see donors' dollars at work for such an amazing and inclusive message to students and their families alike."

How the SOHK Regional Program Works:

The first intake for the SOHK Regional Program will be open from October 1st to October 31st. Interested schools in Northern BC can apply through www.northernhealth.ca

Six schools will be selected to participate in the challenge based on healthy kids' projects they want to accomplish.

Students will view a video featuring Cougars' players that has health, wellness, and philanthropic messages, then record their healthy activities in tracking sheets for the next two weeks.

The school with highest participation rate among its students will be awarded a $5,000 grant. Five, $1,000 grants will be awarded to the other five participant schools, and any school can submit completed tracking forms and be entered into a $500 draw.
