Kane County Cougars News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - Angel Baez and two relievers combined for three-hitter and 13 strikeouts as the Kane County Cougars cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Peoria Chiefs on Monday night at O'Brien Field.
Baez (3-2) matched a season-high with eight punchouts as he tossed six innings, stifling the Chiefs (38-42, 3-8) on just two hits. Zeke DeVoss doubled off Baez with one out in the sixth and was the only Peoria player to even get into scoring position against Baez, who also didn't walk anyone. Cody Fassold kept the shutout rolling as he worked the seventh and eighth frames while fanning four. Robinson Yambati tossed a perfect ninth.
Kane County (41-40, 7-4) sprung for the lead in the second as Jorge Bonifacio and Murray Watts singled to start the inning against Jose Rosario (6-8). Alex Llanos then bounced a ball up the middle that DeVoss mishandled, allowing Bonifacio to score the game's first run. Dean Espy singled home Watts to put the Cougars up by two while Llanos ended up scoring on a passed ball.
Rosario surrendered two more runs in the second as Kenny Swab cracked a run-scoring single to bring home Espy. Swab scored on an error by first baseman Paul Hoilman. Rosario struck out seven while lasting seven innings. The Cougars finished the scoring the fifth with Danny Mateo singling and crossing the dish after a two-bagger by Bonifacio.
