Kane County Cougars News Release

Beloit, WI - The Kane County Cougars are picking up steam. One night after eliminating the Swing of the Quad Cities in the Quarterfinal round, they defeated the Beloit Snappers, 8-3, on Saturday night at Pohlman Field in Game 1 of the Division Championship round of the Midwest League Playoffs. The Cougars are now one win away from advancing to the League Championship Series for the third time in franchise history.

Starter Trey Shields led the way for the Cougars, tossing six innings of two-hit shutout baseball while walking two and fanning seven. His offense, after failing to get a base runner in the first four innings against Snappers starter Zach Ward, came through in the fifth. After two walks and an error, Justin Sellers rolled a two-run single to center for a 2-0 score.

A six-run sixth inning against the Beloit bullpen broke the game open, as Matt Sulentic smashed a two-run triple, Anthony Recker drove in a run with a single, Raul Padron drew a bases-loaded walk and Isaac Omura nailed a two-run single to make it 8-0.

Shields (1-0) left after six innings and got the win. Scott Moore struck out the side in the ninth, Ron Madej gave up two in the eighth and Randy Rapp allowed one in the ninth for the 8-3 final. Ward (0-1) took the tough-luck loss for the Snappers.

Game 2 in the best-of-three series is Sunday night at 6 CT at Elfstrom Stadium. John Herrera will start for the Cougars (3-1) against left-hander Ryan Mullins for the Snappers (2-2).
