Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars kicked off an eight-game homestand with a 3-2 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Northwestern Medicine Field.
Ernie De La Trinidad got the Cougars (20-20) offense rolling early with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the first. In the top of the third, the Kernels (20-19) used an infield single from Jordan Gore to kick start a one-out rally. The next batter, Jean Carlos Arias, collected a single to put runners at first and third with one out. Royce Lewis tied the game with a sacrifice fly on a ball hit to right field. The Kernels took the lead on Alex Kiriloff's RBI single.
In the eighth inning, Renae Martinez belted his fourth homer of the year, a solo shot, tying the game, 2-2.
In the top of the ninth, Jose Miranda led off with a walk. Ben Rortvedt followed with a single. He tried to stretch it to a double and was thrown out at second base. With a runner at third and one out, Ben Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give the Kernels a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, The Cougars had runners at second and third with two outs and Renae Martinez at the plate. Kernels reliever Jared Finkel struck out Martinez to end the game.
Cougar starter Matt Peacock lasted four innings in his first career start, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking one. Abraham Almonte struck out five batters over 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Erbert Gonzalez (1-1) took the loss, allowing the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth.
Finkel (2-1) earned the win, hurling two innings, allowing one run on four hits and walking no one. Starter Edwar Colina tossed five innings, scattering five hits and one run on seven strikeouts. Randy Dobnak provided two innings of shutout relief.
The Cougars' eight-game homestand continues Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars will send Jeff Bain (2-1, 2.31) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Purchase tickets by calling 630-232-8811 or on kccougars.com.
