Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

GENEVA, ILL. - Kane County Cougars outfielder Eduardo Diaz was a double shy of hitting for the cycle Tuesday afternoon but ran through second base on a game-tying triple in the seventh inning before scoring on a wild pitch to give the Cougars an 8-7 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Cougars (21-20) trailed by as many as six runs prior to rallying for their comeback victory.

In the seventh, Diaz turned Kane County's one-run deficit into an 8-7 lead. Diaz tripled to drive in Ernie De La Trinidad from second base, and a wild pitch to Eudy Ramos allowed Diaz to score the tie-breaking run. Diaz's extra base was a critical element to the inning as Ramos and Joey Rose struck out, and Jancarlos Cintron flied out to end the frame.

Diaz flipped the score on Cedar Rapids (20-20), which previously held a 7-6 advantage dating back to the sixth. David Bañuelos got into scoring position with a one-out, sixth-inning double and later scored on a two-out single from Jean Carlos Arias.

Early in Tuesday's tilt, the Kernels jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Trey Cabbage opened the scoring by hitting a solo home run in the second inning. Cedar Rapids added five runs in the third including a two-run triple for Jose Miranda.

The Cougars rallied during their half of the third and later tied the contest, 6-6, in the fifth. Kane County's five-run third-inning rally was capped by a three-run homer from Diaz. The game-tying run during the fifth came when Diaz scored on a wild pitch.

Juan Torres (1-0) allowed an inherited run to score in the sixth but did not allow any runs of his own in a winning decision. Jordan Watson added a perfect eighth inning for his second hold, and Matt Brill registered a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch his team-high fifth save.

Jovani Moran (2-2) took the loss for Cedar Rapids. Moran yielded two runs over two innings pitched and tied starting pitcher Tyler Watson with a game-high five strikeouts.

This four-game series continues with an 11:00 a.m. contest Wednesday at Northwestern Medicine Field. Kernels right-hander Bailey Ober (0-1, 8.04) will start for Cedar Rapids. The Cougars have not officially announced a starting pitcher for the game. Broadcast coverage with Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will be online at www.kmryradio.com and www.kernels.com.
