Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL – The 15th season of baseball at Elfstrom Stadium began with a tough day for the home team. The Kane County Cougars managed just two runs in 14 innings Wednesday, losing both seven-inning ends of a doubleheader against the Beloit Snappers 5-2 and 3-0, respectively.

The Cougars led briefly in game after a two-run third inning. Trailing 1-0, Gregorio Petit walked and Nick Blasi doubled, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Wes Long was the batter when a wild pitch allowed Petit to come home. Then Long walked and took third on Kevin Melillo's run-scoring singled that plated Blasi, giving Kane County a 2-1 edge.

That score held up until the fifth when Cougars starter Ryan Ford got into trouble. The Snappers scored three times, getting two hits, a walk and a stolen base in the frame. Beloit added a run in the sixth when David Winfree doubled to score Johnny Woodard.

Ford (0-1) took the loss for Kane County and Angel Garcia (1-0) got the win in relief for Beloit. Steve Duguay recorded his second save. In game two, Beloit got out early against the Cougars' Michael Rogers, scoring twice in the first and once more in the second to lead 3-0. Kyle Waldrop (1-0) pitched seven innings of three-hit shutout baseball to get the win and hand Rogers (0-2) the loss.

The Cougars (3-3) look to salvage one game from Beloit (5-1) Thursday night in the series finale. Left-hander Derek Tharpe looks to build on his strong seasonal debut last week as he is scheduled to take the mound for the Cougars against Beloit's lefty Alexander Smit. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
