West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

DAYTON – An evening built on singles and the little things ended thanks to one of those little things. Drew Anderson stole second for Dayton with one out in the eleventh, then on the next pitch scored to win the game, 3-2 on a Mayker Sandoval single to right.

In the top of the ninth inning with Matt Parrish at first base, Brent Dlugach kept the game alive by doubling off the wall in right field.

Both scored when Nick McIntyre followed with a double down the left field line to tie the game, 2-2 and ultimately send the contest to extra innings.

McIntyre was thrown out at third on the play, trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

West Michigan finished with seven hits, but had only one going to the seventh inning when the Dragons had amassed nine hits, which were mostly infield singles.

Dayton's first run came in the fourth inning when Sandoval hit a potential double play ball back to pitcher Dallas Trahern. But when Trahern threw to second base, no one was covering the bag. An ensuing throw to first was not in time and Habielito Hernandez scored from third.

In the sixth, the Dragons added another run on a single from Kenny Lewis. Sandoval crossed the plate on the play after knocking a one-out triple off the right field wall.

After the sixth inning, the Whitecaps pitching staff took control as three different hurlers struck out the side in a four inning span: Tony Peralta in the seventh, Ian Ostlund in the eighth and Anthony Tomey.

Peralta and Ostlund registered much needed solid outings after shaky starts. Ostlund was 0-2 after two appearances and Peralta carried an 34.71 ERA into the game.

Tomey, who allowed the game winning run, saw his streak of 3.2 scoreless innings over two-plus outings come to an end.

Rubber Match: After splitting the first two games of the series, the Whitecaps and Dragons will meet again Thursday in Dayton. RHP Josh Kauten (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will be on the mound for West Michigan against Dayton RHP Jon George (0-0, 10.12 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Eikenhout Incorporated Pre Game Show will start at 6:50 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL.
