Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (April 13, 2005) - The grand opening for the new Community Field saw 1,149 fans come out on a cold April night, but only one run for the home team as the Cedar Rapids Kernels came away with a 4-1 win tonight.

Bees' starter Matt Campbell (0-2) loses his second start in a row despite another solid performance. The lefty allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits in six innings. The Kernels first run came in the top of the third on a walk and two errors, one by Miguel Vega at first and one from Ed Lucas at shortstop. The Bees tied the game in the bottom of the third when Alan Moye drove a two-out double to the wall in right-center and scored on a single up the middle by Mario Lisson. In the top of the fourth, Campbell walked Sean Rodriguez to start the inning but picked him off at first. After another walk to Aaron Peel, Michael Collins doubled to the wall in center to drive in Peel and give the Kernels a 2-1 lead. Nate Moore finished the final three innings in relief of Campbell and allowed two runs in the top of the ninth when Jordan Renz followed a Collins' single with a two-run homer to left.

Kernels' starter Fernando Rodriguez (1-0) escaped some danger in the second. The Bees loaded the bases with one out and Darwinson Salazar lined a shot to right field. Warner Madrigal made the catch and then threw out Vega at the plate trying to tag up and score. Other than the two-out run in the third, the Bees didn't mount another threat against Rodriguez, who walked one and struck out three through six innings of work. The Bees didn't get a hit against the Kernels' bullpen. Jamie Douglas stuck out one in a perfect seventh. Frederic DeLoizaga-Carney walked one and struck out one in the eighth. Mitch Arnold walked Moye and Lisson to start the ninth and the Bees brought Brian McFall to the plate as the potential tying run. McFall flied out deep to center and Moye was called out for leaving second too early as he attempted to tag up and move to third. Arnold then struck out Vega to end the game for his first save of the year.

The Bees and Kernels will finish this three-game series with a double-header tomorrow night here at Community Field to make up for last night's rainout. RH Billy Buckner (0-1, 10.38) will start game one for the Bees against LH Nic Touchstone (1-0, 0.00) for the Kernels. Game two has RH Rusty Begnaud (0-0, 0.00) slated to pitch for the Bees against RH Bill Edwards (0-0, 3.00) for Cedar Rapids. The first game will start at 6:00. The gates will open at 5:00. Tomorrow is the first Fat Tuesdays Thirsty Thursday of the year with specials on all drinks throughout the game. The games will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40. For ticket information, fans can call the Bees at (319) 754-5705.
