Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Lansing, Mich.-David Corrente's third hit of the night, a one-out single in the 11th inning, scored Luke Hetherington with the game-winning run as Lansing(5-1) tied the game in the seventh inning on a solo homer by Ryan Klosterman and then won it on Corrente's single, giving Lansing a 4-3 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks(4-2) at Oldsmobile Park.
The winning rally was set up when birthday boy Hetherington beat out an infield hit to start the 11th. He was sacrificed to second by Christian Snavely and after Klosterman was intentionally walked, Corrente delivered the game-winning single to center field to send home Hetherington with the game-winner.
Lansing took the early lead for starter A.J. Wideman(ND) in the third inning when with two outs Cory Patton doubled in Corrente and Curtis Thigpen to give the Lugnuts a 2-0 edge. Wideman would retire the first two hitters in the fourth, part of setting down the first 11 hitters of the night, but then he issued a two-out walk to Mark Reynolds. Cesar Nicolas followed with a two-run homer to left-center to tie the score.
South Bend would take the lead in the fifth inning when with two outs, Travis Gulick collected a single to plate Allen Mottram and give the visitors a 3-2 edge.
Silver Hawks starter A.J. Shappi(ND) took that lead into the seventh inning, but with one out, gave up a solo homer to left by Klosterman to tie the score once more. It was Klosterman's second homer of the year.
After Wideman left after the sixth, Mark Sopko worked four shutout innings behind the Lansing starter to keep the score knotted at 3-3 into the 11th. Joey McLaughlin(1-0) walked one and struck out one in the top of the 11th to earn his first win of the year and set up the winning rally off the third Silver Hawks pitcher of the night, Hipolito Guerrero(0-1). Lansing goes for the series win tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. as righty Kyle Yates gets the nod for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by fellow righthander Russ Ohlendorf.
