Cougars drop their first home series, lose 6-3

Geneva, IL - The West Michigan Whitecaps (23-19) completed the series win with a 6-3 victory over the Kane County Cougars (27-15) on Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium. The series loss for the Cougars was their first at Elfstrom Stadium this season, and they dropped to 9-11 against the Eastern Division.

The Whitecaps scored the final five runs of the game helping Troy Pickford (3-3) to earn the victory. Pickford allowed five hits and three runs in six innings pitched, but he didn't allow a hit after the third inning. Cristian Gonzalez (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season for the Cougars. He gave up a season high eight hits and five runs, walked two and fanned four.

The Whitecaps began their way towards victory by scoring two runs off Gonzalez in the third inning. Victor Mendez gave West Michigan a 2-1 advantage with an RBI ground out to second base. Brent Clevlen followed with a run scoring single to right field. The visitors scored two more runs in the fifth inning in Gonzalez's final inning of work. Scott Moore tripled home Juan Gonzalez and Jody Roughton's RBI single made it 5-3 West Michigan. Chris Shank was touched for the final run in the sixth inning.

The Cougars got off to a quick start, scoring a run in their first at-bat. Francis Gomez led off the team's first at-bat by reaching on an error by the shortstop, Juan Gonzalez, three batters later John Baker delivered a sacrifice fly. West Michigan tied the game in the second inning on a wild pitch by Gonzalez.

The teams would exchange leads in the middle innings. Kane County plated home two runs in the third inning off Pickford. John McCurdy lined an RBI single to score Francis Gomez, who led off the inning with a double. McCurdy scored on a Nelson Cruz single. The RBI for Cruz was his league leading 39th of the season.

The Cougars travel to Battle Creek tomorrow night to face the Yankees in a four-game series through Tuesday. Drew Dickinson LHP (4-2, 2.96) takes the mound for the Cougars; Jeremy King RHP (3-3, 3.60) gets the start for Battle Creek.
