Riding the Wave of History: Prince George Cougars Playoff White Out
The Prince George Cougars have a storied history dating back to the 1990s, when the team relocated to Prince George from Victoria. As their playoff aspirations began to grow, so did the passion of the fans. One of the manifestations of this fervor is the playoff white out, a spirited tradition that has captured the hearts of Cougars' fans and truly sets the stage for playoff excitement.
The Beginning of the Playoff White Out
From the moment they arrived, the people of Prince George embraced the Cougars with open arms, eager to express their enthusiasm for the team. In 1997, as the Cougars advanced to the playoffs for the first time, the playoff white-out tradition was born. It began by encouraging fans to wear white to home games, creating an awe-inspiring and unified sea of white throughout the arena.
Fan and Community Involvement
The playoff white out has always been about more than just the team on the ice; it's a celebration of the Cougars' faithful fans and the community of Prince George as a whole. Local businesses have often shown their support during playoff runs, decorating their storefronts with white and Cougars memorabilia, and offering special deals to fans decked out in their white attire. The outpouring of community support helps rally the team and adds fuel to their drive for success.
Memorable Playoff Moments
Throughout the years, there have been countless unforgettable moments during the white out games. Whether it's been incredible saves from the likes of Chris Mason, Scott Myers, or Real Cyr. The intense overtime winners like Devin Setoguchi is Game 4 to sweep the Kamloops Blazers in 2007, or a dramatic series comebacks and upsets like we saw in 1997 and 2007. These Cougar moments serve to strengthen the bond between the team and its fans. During the 2007 playoffs, for example, the Cougars defied the odds and had a thrilling run that captured the excitement of the entire community.
The Enduring Legacy
The Cougars' playoff white out is a treasured part of the hockey history in Prince George. It's a symbol of unity, pride, and passion.
