PEORIA, IL - The Kane County Cougars have shut out their opponent six times this month, but Wednesday night they were the club getting blanked, losing, 5-0, to the Peoria Chiefs in the finale of a two-game series at O'Brien Field. The loss moves the Cougars one game behind the Chiefs and two games back of the Cedar Rapids Kernels for the Western Division wild card spot.

The Cougars mustered just five hits -- all singles -- against a pitching trio of Robert Hernandez (7-9), Casey Lambert and Matt Maradeo, and three of those came in the early part of the game. The Cougars had runners at second third with one out in the opening frame but couldn't score, squandered a chance in the second with two men on base and also missed an opportunity in the third with two controversial calls on one play. Only three more Cougars got on base the rest of the way. Cougars starter James Heuser (11-8) gave up five runs -- four earned -- over 5 1/3 innings, yielding six hits, walking four and fanning five in the loss. Scott Moore posted 2 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief afterward.

The Cougars (34-29) are back home Thursday for a doubleheader against the playoff-bound Beloit Snappers (31-32). Both contests are seven-inning affairs, and Game 1 starts at 3:30 CT. Jason Fernandez (7-2) and Trevor Cahill (10-4) will handle the starting pitcher for the Cougars.
