Cougars Beat T-Birds 5-4

SEATTLE, January 18, 2004 — The Prince George Cougars defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4 Sunday night in front of 3,867 at KeyArena.

Seattle put a season high 48 shots on goal in the loss. Seattle had 17 shots in the first, 10 shots in the second and 21 shots in the third.

Yashar Farmanara put back a rebound from the left crease at 3:26 of the first to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. Nate Thompson brought the puck out from behind the Prince George net and took a shot from the left face-off dot. Denis Tolpeko, from the right circle, slapped at Thompson's rebound, and the puck went to Farmanara in the crease, where he easily put the puck past out of position Prince George goalie Jordan McLaughlin for his fourth goal of the year.

Seattle (13-22-8-2) went up 2-0 when Thompson put back a rebound from a Tolpeko shot at 15:22 of the second. Cole Simpson had the second assist on Thompson's goal.

Seattle went up 3-0 when Dustin Johner tipped a Clayton Barthel slap shot from the blue line past McLaughlin at 18:01 of the first. It was Johner's 17th of the year. Chris Durand had the second assist.

Jonathan Filewich put the Cougars on the board with a slap shot from between the top of the face-off circles that beat Seattle goalie Josh Lepp low on the stick side at 2:17 of the second. Clay Plume and Myles Zimmer had the assists.

Prince George (20-22-6-0) cut the T-Birds lead to one when Chris Falloon snuck the puck past Lepp just under the crossbar at 5:16 of the second. Nicholas Drazenovic had the assist on Falloon's 21st goal of the year.

Filewich tied the game 3-3 at 8:18 of the second. He put a wrist shot on goal that beat Lepp on the glove side for his second of the night. Zimmer and Devin Featherstone had the assists on the goal.

Bryan Bridges replaced Lepp in net after the third Cougar goal. Lepp had 16 saves on 19 shots when he was pulled.

Prince George took a 4-3 lead when Colin Patterson beat Bridges on the stick side from the high slot at 11:31 of the second. Nicholas Drazenovic had the assist on the go-ahead goal.

Seattle crashed the net all night long and it paid off for a third time when Thompson stuffed a rebound past McLaughlin from the slot at 3:45 of the third to tie the game 4-4. Kyle Fecho and Justin Maiser had the assists on Thompson's second goal of the night. Thompson had three points on the night and now has 10 goals and 28 points.

Zimmer scored the game-winning goal when he beat Bridges at 12:39 of the third. Filewich and Featherstone had the assists.

McLaughlin had 44 saves on 48 shots and improves his record to 10-8-1. Bridges gets the loss for the Thunderbirds. He had 10 saves on 12 shots in his period and a half of play and his record drops to 8-13-3.

Nine Thunderbirds registered a point in Sunday night's game.

Seattle takes on the Tri-City Americans Wednesday night KeyArena at 7 p.m.
