Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winter Hawks traveled to Everett, Washington tonight to take on the expansion Silvertips in their first of three games in three nights and came up short as the âTips went on to defeat the Hawks 6-3 in front of 8,101 at the Everett Event Center, advancing the Hawks record to 19-20-4-1 on the season and losing their fifth in a row.
Six different players scored for the Silvertips in their 6-3 win over the Winter Hawks as Everett has yet to lose a game after leading after the first and second periods of play. Portland got on the board first as Brandon Dubinsky netted his 19th of the season in the first period from Dan Da Silva. But Everett tied things up as Mitch Love scored his 6th of the season, un-assisted. Everett then went on to take a 2-1 lead as John Dahl picked up his 17th of the season, with the lone assist being credited to Torrie Wheat. The Hawks came back though to tie things up in the second as Dan Da Silva scored his 22nd goal of the season and 16th in his last 21 games, from Richie Regehr and Brandon Dubinsky, while on the power play. Portland's Shane Halifax then took a high sticking penalty which then lead to Everett taking a 3-2 lead as Barry Horman got his 11th of the season from Riley Armstrong and Ivan Baranka for a power play goal, after the âTips had gone 26 chances without scoring while on the power play. Baranka then went on to give the âTips a 2-goal lead as he netted his 2nd of the season from Martin Ruzicka. With 15-seconds remaining in the second, Portland's Robin Big Snake gave the Hawks momentum heading into the third period as he put one past Jeff Harvey for his 10th of the season from Dubinsky and Regehr while on a 4-on-4 situation. Everett however came out in the third and took a commanding lead on Jeff Schmidt's 4th goal of the season to put the Silvertips up 5-3, 2:48 into the period, while on the power play. Chad Bassen then added and empty netter with 34-seconds remaining in the game after Portland pulled goaltender Krister Toews, as Everett went on to beat the Hawks 6-3.
The Everett Silvertips came out in the first period with the extra jump in their step to out play the Winter Hawks for most of the play, but the Hawks were the ones who were able to jump on the board first to take a 1-0 lead mid-way thru the period. Hawks second year 17-year old center man Brandon Dubinsky was able to break up a clearing pass for an up ice rush as he drove in to the slot and fired a backhander from the top of the crease for his 19th goal of the season, high glove side of Silvertips starting goaltender Jeff Harvey at 7:33 of the period. With not having much of a physical presence in the back end in the period for the Winter Hawks and with the Silvertips winning most of the battles in the trenches, that allowed the âTips to be able to tie things up 2:18 after Dubinsky's goal as Everett's Mitch Love picked up the puck off the tip of Hawks 18-year old right winger Dan Da Silva's stick on a Hawks turn over along the left wing boards. No one was able to pick up Love, which allowed him to backhand it home past Portland's Krister Toews for his 6th goal of the season, un-assisted at 9:51 to even the score. Everett then went on to take a 2-1 lead 2:02 later as 17-year old John Dahl netted his 17th goal of the season on a give and go play to backhand it past Toews at 11:53 in the period, where after leading at the end of the first period, the Silvertips have never lost a game.
The Winter Hawks picked up their physical play in the second and played a much better period as Dan Da Silva tied things up with a power play goal at 9:58 for his 16th goal in his last 21 games for
his 22nd on the season. Portland's 20-year old defenseman Richie Regehr, who turned 21 years old today, blasted the initial shot from the top of the blue line, as the puck bounced off Harvey's pads to Da Silva who was paying the price in front of the net and was able to get the puck in past Harvey on the rebounded shot to even things up at 2-2. After twenty six chances in a row without scoring a power play goal from previous games, the Silvertips were finally able to get one in as they went on to take a 3-2 lead after Portland's Shane Halifax was called for a high sticking penalty at 14:29. âTips right-winger Barry Horman was able to mussel away from a check by Regehr along the half wall as he broke down the left-wing and let it rip from the top of the left face off circle at 15:38 for his 11th goal of the season. Everett then re-gained the momentum as they took a 4-2 lead 1:01 later as Ivan Baranka was able to get a slap shot in past Toews, low glove side, just inside the blue line for his 2nd of the season, right off the face off in a 4-on-4 situation, from the left point. But with 15 seconds remaining in the period, the Hawks gained momentum back as Dubinsky won the draw for Portland and was able to take the puck forward. Dubinsky took the initial shot in on goal but the puck bounced back off of Harvey's pads and landed on Winter Hawks Robin Big Snake's stick where he was able to hammer it past Harvey for his 10th goal of the season, from Dubinsky and Regehr on a 4-on-4 play to give the Hawks hope heading in to the second intermission.
Portland was un-able to penetrate down low in the third and Everett went on to take a commanding 5-3 lead over the Winter Hawks, with their 2nd power play goal in the game at 2:48 as Jeff Schmidt netted his 4th of the season on a deflection tip in shot. Silvertips Chad Bassen then went on to add an empty netter with 34-seconds remaining in the game for his 11th goal of the season after Portland had pulled starting goal tender Krister Toews in hopes to make a come back with the man advantage, but could not capitalize and would fall short as the âTips would go on to down the Hawks 6-3 and Portland would go on to lose their fifth game in a row.
The Hawks scratched (D) Taylor Sutherlin, (RW) C.J. Jackson and (LW) Frazer McLaren due to numbers. Portland now travels to Kamloops, B.C. to face the Blazers tomorrow night at 7:00 pm with a 6:35 pm airtime on 970-am KUPL, then will travel to Prince George, B.C. on Tuesday to face the Cougars with a 7:05 pm airtime, also on 970-am KUPL before returning home to host the Spokane Chiefs at the Rose Garden at 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 22nd.
