Prince George Cougars News Release
George, BC - The Prince George Cougars announced Thursday the acquisition of 20 year old goaltender Drew Owsley from the Tri-City Americans. The Cougars also get a conditional seventh round selection in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. In exchange, the Cougars have sent 19 year old goalie Ty Rimmer to the Americans along with a third round pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft and a fifth round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
In Owsley, the Cougars get a proven winner who left his mark in three seasons with the Americans. Owsley, a 5'8", 170 pound product of Lethbridge, Alberta, played in 55 games last season, posting a regular season record of 36-17-1-1. Owsley finished third among Western Hockey League goaltenders in wins (36), sixth in goals against average (2.77), eighth in save percentage (.912) and tied for fourth in shoot-out save percentage (12/15, .800). Owsley's four shut-outs tied him for fifth overall in the WHL.
Owsley's career statistics left him second all-time among Americans goaltenders in save percentage at .911. Owsley comes to the Cougars third in career wins by an Americans netminder (76), goals against average (2.68) and shut-outs (9). In playoff action, Owsley is the Americans career leader in games played (29), minutes played (1684), wins (18), save percentage (.920) and shut-outs (3). Owsley backstopped the Americans to the 2010 Western Conference crown.
"Drew is a proven winner and his numbers back that up," said Cougars General Manager Dallas Thompson. "We needed to solidify our goaltending position and we feel we have done that by acquiring Drew. We are excited to have his ability and experience in Prince George for the upcoming season."
The Cougars would like to thank Ty Rimmer for his service to the Cougars organization and wish him the best in the future.
The Prince George Cougars begin training camp on Friday, August 26, at CN Centre. The Cougars open the 2011-12 regular season on Saturday, September 24 in Kamloops against the Blazers. The Cougars home opener will be held on Friday, September 30 against the Victoria Royals, starting at 7:00pm. Tickets are available by calling Ticketmaster at 250-564-5585.
