Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

Lubbock, Texas - The Lubbock Cotton Kings scored the first three goals of the game en route to a 3-1 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas in Wednesday night CHL action at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.

The Cotton Kings were clearly the aggresor in the first period of play, outshooting the Brahmas by a 21-3 margin in the game's opening twenty minutes. Fort Worth's second year goaltender, Larry Sterling, withstood the early Lubbock barrage, keeping the contest scoreless until the 17:25 mark of the period when Cotton Kings forward Jan Melichercek scored a powerplay goal in the slot off of an assist by Bobby Brown.

In the second period, Lubbock wasted little time extending their lead. First, forward Vic Pereira tipped in the rebound of an Emory Olauson shot 1:51 into the middle frame. Then, just 1:28 later Cotton Kings rookie forward Kyle Nosan scored his thirteenth goal of the season to push the Lubbock margin to 3-0. Following the Nosan goal, the game turned physical, as the Brahmas and the Cotton Kings combined for eight fighting majors in a span of 82 seconds. By the time the dust cleared, Fort Worth's Chris Bain and Lubbock's Paul Fioroni had been issued game misconducts. The altercations could not spark Fort Worth, as Lubbock continued to carry play. Fort Worth would manage to get on the scoreboard late in the second period on Ben Gustavson's thirteenth goal of the year, but, unfortunately for the Brahmas, that was their lone offensive highlight of the night.

The third period provided little drama, as neither Fort Worth or Lubbock could score. The rough stuff also came to an end, as the team's combined for just four minor penalties in the final stanza.

Sterling played outstanding in defeat for the Brahmas, making 44 saves on 47 Lubbock shots. Lubbock's goaltender Brett Koscielny stopped 27 of the 28 Fort Worth shots he faced in the game to earn the win.

The loss for the Brahmas was their third in a row and drops their record to 16-33-8 on the season. The win for Lubbock improves the Cotton Kings record to 23-27-4 for the year.

Fort Worth will continue their weekend road trip with two games in Loveland, Colorado against the defending CHL President's Cup champion Colorado Eagles on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11. Both games, which will be broadcast live by the Brahmas on KHFX 1460 AM, will be played at the Budweiser Events Center and begin at 8:05 p.m. CST.
