Rayz fall 3-2 in shootout to Jacks

Odessa, TX - The Corpus Christi Rayz got points for the third straight game against division leaders on Thursday night in Odessa, but they fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Odessa Jackalopes. A back and forth game, highlighted by brilliant goaltending between Brent Zelenwich and Mike Gorman, yielded the extra frame finish. The Rayz will now put their three-game point streak on the line Friday night at the American Bank Center when the Rio grande Valley Killer Bees come to town. Scott Hillman gave the Jacks an early 1-0 lead at 7:36 of the first period when his shot from the blue line deflected through Brent Zelenewich's legs. The Rayz answered when Chris Robertson beat Mike Gorman from the left circle on a two on one rush at 14:54. Robertson's 12th goal of the season was assisted from Derrick McIver and tied the score at one. The Rayz outshot the Jacks 14-10 in the opening period.

In the second period, the Rayz got a huge play from Brent Zelenewich when he stoned Dominic Leveille on penalty shot. The Rayz took their first lead when Matt Holmes put in his own rebound at 8:34 of the second to give the Rayz a 2-1 lead. The Rayz outshot the Jacks 13-12 in the period.

John Kozoriz tied the game in the third with a shot that bounced and deflected past Zelenewich at 12:35 setting the stage for overtime. The Jacks outshot the Rayz 15-9 in the third period. Both teams had chances in overtime, but neither scored and they decided the game in a shootout. Sebastien Thinel and and Leveille scored for the Jacks and only Randy Murphy tallied for the Rayz as Odessa hung on for the 3-2 win in the shootout.

The Rayz shootout loss moved their record 21-31-4 on the season for 46 points. The Jackalopes improved their season mark to 32-17-6 for 70 points. Zelenewich (41 shots, 39 saves) stopped two of four in the shoot out and suffered the overtime loss, watching his record move to 7-15-2. Gorman (40 shots, 38 saves) stopped four of five in the shootout and took the win improving his record to 24-12-3. The Rayz went 0-7 on the power play and the Jacks went 0-6. The Rayz will return to the American Bank Center this weekend for games versus the Rio Grande valley Killer Bees on Friday Night and Lubbock Cotton Kings Sunday afternoon.
