PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - St. Lucie Mets second baseman Carlos Cortes stunned the Florida Fire Frogs by hitting a two-run walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday at First Data Field.
The Mets won the game 10-9. The Mets led 3-0 after three innings, trailed 7-4 after six innings, tied the game 7-7 in the seventh inning, then entered the ninth down 9-7.
Quinn Brodey started the ninth inning rally with a double. He scored on an error by the catcher William Contreras when Contreras threw away a dribbler hit by Jeremy Vasquez.
The Fire Frogs thought they ended the game with a double play when the next batter Luis Carpio hit a popup that was dropped at second base by Brett Langhorne. Langhorne picked up the dropped ball, threw to second base to force out Vasquez and then shortstop Riley Unroe threw back to first base to get Carpio. The Fire Frogs came out of the dugout in celebration, but the umpires got together and ruled Carpio was out on a popup and Vasquez was safe back at first base.
Cortes, the next batter, launched the first pitch he saw over the center field wall just out of the reach of Greyson Jenista for the walk-off winner. It was Cortes' first home run of the season. The homer came off of reliever Brandon White, who had retired the first four batters he faced in the eighth inning and into the ninth.
Brodey went 4 for 4 with a triple, double, two singles, a walk, three RBI and three runs scored.
Blake Tiberi went 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
Cortes also had three hits and four RBI.
The Mets (11-10) and Fire Frogs (7-14) play game 2 of their series at First Data Field on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
