Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

The Corpus Christi Rayz added grittiness and experience on Friday morning, just in time for their stretch run into the post-season. The Rayz signed free-agent forward Jim Shepherd for the remainder of the 2007 season and the playoffs. Shepherd, who last played in the CHL in 2004 for current Rayz Head Coach, Ken McRae with the Indianapolis Ice, will make his Rayz debut on Sunday in Laredo. Shepherd was signed Friday, but still has to serve two remaining games from a suspension earned in his previous CHL stint. Along with Shepherd's arrival, the Rayz also received Derrick McIver back from the AHL's San Antonio Rampage and placed defensemen Jay Hardwick and Jason Lepine on the 14-day injured reserve list.

Shepherd, 29, becomes the Rayz third veteran this season, joining forward Matt Turek and defenseman Geno Parrish. The nine-year forward began this season playing in England where he has spent the past two years and totaled 75 points (34 goals, 41 assists) in 79 games, while adding 226 penalty minutes. His last North American experience came in 2004-2005 where he split time between the Louisiana IceGators and the Augusta Lynx in the ECHL. Shepherd has years of CHL/WPHL experience as well.

In 2003-2004, the Kingston, Ontario native played 38 games for the Lubbock Cotton Kings, before being dealt to Indianapolis for the final part of the season and playoffs. In 1999-2000, the 6'0", 215lbs. forward notched 60 points in 66 games and 173 PIM with the Austin Ice Bats of the then WPHL. From 1998-2000, Shepherd played a total of nine games in the AAA-level, IHL with the Houston Aeros, scoring two goals and four points.
