Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

The Third Annual Central Hockey League's "Best of the Best" poll results were announced Tuesday morning, and the Corpus Christi Rayz received four awards in the league-wide survey poll. The Rayz were recognized for excellence in four different categories. The top three vote getters in 40 different categories are named in the poll completed by all 15 CHL Teams. The Best of the Best Poll rewards individuals and teams for on and off the ice achievement. Rayz forward Ryan Carter was at the head of the winners for Corpus Christi as he was named the Most Underrated Player in the CHL. The Rayz will begin a new week of hockey Thursday night in Odessa, before returning home for weekend games on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Tickets are still available, but only four home games remain this season. For more information, contact the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.

Carter, 28, captured first place in an individual category for the second straight year. Last season the British Columbia native was named the Best Overall Penalty Killer, tying a Rayz franchise high with five shorthanded goals. Carter's award for Most Underrated Player in the CHL comes just days after he matched his career high in goals over the weekend. Carter currently ranks second on the team in goals with 19 and third in team points with 42. This season is Carter's fourth in pro hockey. In every season, Carter has surpassed his previous goal and point total from the year before. The former Iona University standout is one goal and nine points shy of setting new career marks this season.

In addition to Carter's award, the Rayz received three other awards. Rayz captain, Bernie John was named the Most Gentlemanly Player in the league in a new category this season. In the past two seasons with the Rayz, John has played in 107 games and amassed only 28 penalty minutes. This season in 55 games, John has 43 points, and just 16 minutes in penalties. Goaltender Scott Reid was named the third best goaltender in the league, collecting three first place votes in the process. Reid was named an All-Star this season for the third straight year. He currently is third in the CHL in save percentage with a .926 mark. He ranks tops in the CHL in saves per game, stopping nearly 35 shots per contest. The final award for the Rayz was third place in Best On-Ice Promotions. Last season the Rayz won the Best Game Operations Award at the 2005 CHL Spring Conference Awards Banquet.
