Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - Biloxi Shuckers outfielder Corey Ray has been named the Southern League Player of the Week for the week of July 16-22, the league announced on Monday. It is the first time Ray has earned Player of the Week honors in his career.
Over the course of six games, Ray slashed .478/.520/1.043 with four doubles, three home runs, five RBI and three stolen bases. His seven extra-base hits were the most in the Southern League and tied for the fifth most in all of Minor League Baseball. He reached base safely in all six games during the week and recorded four multi-hit games to help the Shuckers to a 6-0 record. His 11 hits and 24 total bases also led the Southern League during the week.
Taken fifth overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 draft out of Louisville, Ray homered in three of his final four games this week, including an inside-the-park homer on July 20 against the Tennessee Smokies, his second inside-the-park trip around the bases this season. He capped his week with a three hit performance against the Smokies on Sunday, July 22, including two doubles and a leadoff home run, the sixth time Ray has started a game with a homer.
In his third professional season, Ray's name is smattered across the Southern League leaderboard. He is first in the Southern League in extra-base hits (52), doubles (27), total bases (195) and stolen bases (30), tied with teammate Jake Gatewood for the league lead in home runs (19), second in hits (99), runs scored (64) and slugging percentage (.510) and tied for third in triples (6).
Ray is the second Biloxi Shucker to earn Player of the Week honors this year, joining Jake Gatewood, who captured the award for the week of May 27. He's the fourth Shucker to be recognized by the Southern League, after RHP Zack Brown was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for June 11 and RHP Jon Olczak was named the Southern League Relief Pitcher of the Month for May.
