Copperheads Offense Drowns Sharks

From the beginning, the Asheboro Copperheads (12-5) had the upper hand on the Wilmington Sharks (11-8). On Wednesday night, they scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, downing the Sharks 11-3.

After the three in the first inning, the Copperheads went on to score in six of the nine innings, collecting 18 hits. TJ Nichting (UNC Charlotte) had five hits and scored three times.

For the Sharks, Madison Stokes (South Carolina) made his debut for the Sharks in a big way. He doubled twice and scored both times. The only other scoring came when Nick Romola (Oral Roberts) scored on a Brett Smith (Bucknell) sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

The win went to Devin Sweet (5-1). He pitched seven innings with a run on five hits, two walks and struck out eight. Hank Nichols (1-1) took the loss, pitching four and a third innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out three.

The Sharks finish off the two game homestand with Holly Springs on Thursday, and will travel to Holly Springs on Friday.
