Copperheads Late Rally Bites Steamers

ASHEBORO, NC - The Copperheads scored three times in the bottom of the seventh against the Steamers bullpen and Dylan Dickens allowed just one hit over his two innings of works as Asheboro defeated Edenton 5-3 on Wednesday at McCrary Park.

Edenton took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning off of Jordan Elliot, the starting pitcher for the Copperheads when Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) singled and Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) doubled behind him. With two outs Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana State University of Pennsylvania) singled and Branigan and Beaird came home to score. Zinsmeister picked up 11 and 12 on the season.

Asheboro, against Kevin Bibler (Southern {Polytechnic State University), scraped away at the Steamers lead. The Copperheads picked up their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth and finally scored their first run of the game. Jared Hammer, Matt Reistetter and Lucas Witt all singled in the fourth with Witt picking up the RBI with an infield single to put Asheboro on the board.

Asheboro tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a lead-off single, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and then Caleb Cole hit an RBI ground out that scored Bowen Woodson and the score was 2-2.

After the Steamers scored the two runs in the second inning Elliot only allowed two hits over the next five innings he pitched to the Steamers. In total he pitched seven innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits and one walk. He struck out six in the win and improved to 1-3 on the season.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh inning. Bibler exited after six innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits and two walks; he struck out two also, earning a no decision for his efforts. Matt Duncan (Morehead State University) entered the game and with one out walked two batters and gave up a single to load the bases. The next two batters hit into fielder's choice scoring a run apiece. David Teasley (Mercer University) relieved Duncan and Luke Tendler singled scoring Hunter Ridge. On the play Madison Beaird in right field charged the ball and threw a strike to the plate in time to get Jared Hammer at the plate. For Beaird it was the 10th runner he has thrown out on the base paths this season.

The Steamers picked up a run in the top of the eighth on an error, a walk and an infield single that loaded the bases. Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) took an RBI walk to make it 5-3. The RBI was Camporeale's league leading 34 of the season.

Duncan took his second loss of the season falling to 6-2 for his one-third of an inning of work. He gave up three runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks.

Dylan Dickens pitched thfinal two frames and allowed one hit to earn his second save of the season in the 5-3 win for the Copperheads.

Leading the way for the Steamers in the loss was Madison Beaird with a double and Robbie Zinsmeister with a two-run single.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
