Morehead City Marlins News Release

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins (18-29 overall, 8-12 second half) won their fourth straight game, 4-0 over the Florence RedWolves (23-25 overall, 10-10 second half) behind the pitching staff's first shutout of the season Wednesday evening at Big Rock Stadium.

Blane Reutter (1-1) tossed six shutout innings, allowing just five hits and striking out one while Ben Van KeKerix and Evan Zerff combined for three shutout innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one hit.

The Marlins scored the go-ahead run in the third inning when Geoff DeGroot singled and Chad Shannon walked. After a double-steal put runners on second and third DeGroot scored on a passed ball to give the Fish a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning the Marlins scored again, this time on a double by Corey Bass. Sal Annunziata led off with a double and two batters later Ryan Cranmer singled to put runners on the corners. That's when Bass launched a two-run double to left-center field to give the Marlins a 3-0 advantage.

Morehead City scored the final run of the evening in the fifth inning when Shannon singled and later scored on an RBI-groundout off the bat of Sam Ott.

The Marlins kept the RedWolves off the board early with a pair of outfield assists. In the first inning with one out and a runner on third, DeGroot made a diving catch in shallow left-center field before firing the throw to cutoff man Reed Gordy who gunned down the runner at the plate for a double play. Then in the second inning, Ott made a play in right field and made the throw home where RedWolves runner Jeff Gardner collided with Bass and was called out on the play for not sliding.

Beau Dees (0-3) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innings of work.

The Marlins are on the road tomorrow evening when they take on the Thomasville HiToms. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: Shannon walked twice and stole two bases... The winning streak is the Marlins longest of the season... The Marlins are now 2-4 against teams from the West Division this summer.
