Copeland Commits to Colorado College

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks forward Ben Copeland has chosen to attend Colorado College upon completion of his junior hockey career, the Waterloo Black Hawks announced Monday.

Spending his first full season in Waterloo, the 17-year-old from Edina, Minnesota has appeared in six games for the Black Hawks. In early action, Copeland has one assist and a +1 plus/minus differential. Last season, he was in the lineup for seven contests as an affiliate.

Copeland is a well-regarded prospect for the 2017 National Hockey League Draft. Last month, NHL Central Scouting graded him as a "C" skater, indicating that he might be a candidate for selection in the fourth through sixth rounds of picks next summer, based on early viewings.

Waterloo and Colorado College have ties which date back to the senior hockey era when original Black Hawks Duke Dutkowski and Chris Batley came to Waterloo to extend their playing careers after skating for the Tigers. The most recent connection between the two teams was Scott Wamsganz, who played in Waterloo during 2009/10 and for Colorado College from 2011/12 through 2014/15.

Copeland is one of 13 Hawks committed to an NCAA Division I school.

Waterloo's second home game of the season is Saturday against the Muskegon Lumberjacks at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Black Hawks 2016/17 schedule poster, presented by Karen's Print Rite. The Hawks will also wear pink jerseys, which will be auctioned later this month, with profits benefitting local breast cancer patients. The special sweaters are sponsored by Great Clips; Waterloo's breast cancer awareness efforts during October are also presented by the Breast Care Center. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at 319.291.7680 or visit waterlooblackhawks.com.
