Bristol State Liners News Release
The Bristol Pirates wrapped up their six-game home stand with a 7-6 win over the Kingsport Mets to take the series and move within two games of the Mets in the Appalachian League West Division standings.
With the win, the Pirates are tied for third place in the division with the Johnson City Cardinals and sit two games behind the Mets and five games behind division leader Elizabethton.
Yondry Contreras had a career night for Bristol, finishing 4-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and five RBI. Contreras had gone 156 at-bats without a home run entering Monday's game, and his two- homer performance matched his season total from 2017. His five RBI also tied the single-game high for the Pirates this season, matching Jonah Davis' five-RBI performance from July 11 against the Pulaski Yankees. Contreras was involved in six of the team's seven runs scored in the win, driving in five and scoring the sixth run of the game on a wild pitch.
After struggling in his last two starts, Shane Baz improved to 3-2 after allowing only two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings while striking out nine. It was Baz's second nine-strikeout performance this year, and his fifth start with at least five strikeouts. Baz took over the Appalachian League lead in strikeouts with 38 over 32 2/3 innings, passing Eric Pardinho who has 37 strikeouts for the Bluefield Blue Jays.
Argenis Romano earned his second hold of the season by allowing only two walks and no runs over three innings while tying his season-high with five strikeouts. It was Romano's seventh scoreless appearance this season, as he lowered his ERA to an Appalachian League-leading 1.07.
The Pirates (14-17) begin a six-game road trip on Tuesday, as they head to Bluefield to begin a three- game series with the Blue Jays. Bristol has lost six-straight games against the Blue Jays, and they have lost five of their last seven games at Bowen Field.
