Kingsport Axmen News Release
The Kingsport Mets got a much-needed victory Tuesday evening as they defeated the Danville Braves 3-1 in a rain shortened contest.
With rain looming, Kingsport and Danville played five of the quickest innings imaginable, as the teams were deadlocked in a scoreless tie after just 1:05 of game time.
Mets' starter Jose Butto and Braves' starter Jose Montilla matched each other pitch for pitch, each giving up two hits apiece and holding their opponents off the scoreboard.
In the sixth the Braves struck first on a leadoff homer by Justin Dean. Butto would rebound and retire the next three Braves to give the Mets a chance.
As rain began to fall in the sixth the Mets were able to get two men aboard, and with two outs Mark Vientos came up with swing of the game.
Vientos cracked a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall, as the rain intensified and lightning grew more frequent.
For Vientos it was the fourth long ball of the year and 20th RBI for the 2017 Mets' second round pick.
Montilla was able to retire the side before the umpires called for the tarp. The rain was unrelenting and the umpires called the game, giving Kingsport game one of the series.
With the win, Butto improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Mets and Braves will continue their series tomorrow evening at 6:30, with gates opening at 5:30.
