ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), played an excellent game, keeping pace with the first-place Kalamazoo throughout, but fell to the Wings by a final score of 2-1.
Kory Karlander got the K-Wings on the board first at the 7:17 mark of the first period. The Vipers retaliated in the second period at 7:57 as David Beauregard scored a power play goal off assists from Vipers newcomers Charlie Elezi and Erick Lajoie. Just over a minute later, Tyler Rennette got the puck to Nick Bootland off the faceoff, and the latter slipped the puck around the Vipers defense and into the net past the reach of Conschafter.
The Vipers rallied and kept the pressure on for the remainder of the match, but were robbed of a goal at 19:55 of the third period with a controversial penalty call in front of the net. With a two-man Vipers advantage, Alex Jerofejevs took a shot on goal from the point, which was pushed into the net at the same time that referee Jason Rollins made a goaltender interference call on Elezi, therefore causing the goal not to count. The play virtually killed Roanoke's chances of evening the score, as the final five seconds ticked off the clock and the horn sounded ending the game.
"Losing by a goal to Kalamazoo is nothing to be ashamed of," said Vipers General Manager Tim Callahan.
One of many bright spots in the Vipers loss, however, was netminder Shawn Conschafter, who looked strong and healthy in goal against the K-Wings. Conschafter stopped 29 of 31 Kalamazoo shots, and made several dazzling saves that had the crowd on their feet.
The Vipers will play the third and final game of the season against the K-Wings tomorrow night at 7:35p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center. Call the Vipers office at (540) 345-PUCK (7825) to get your tickets or visit the Civic Center box office prior to the game. Vipers hockey - Catch the Fever!
