Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC: The Road Warriors battled back late in the game, overcoming a 5-3 deficit to win 6-5 in overtime against the Florida Everblades.
Greenville started the game with a quick surge as Brendan Connolly began the scoring 38 seconds in receiving a pass from Francis Verreault behind the net. Two fights would occur early in the first period. The second fight would occur after a big Bretton Cameron hit that Florida Captain Mathieu Roy would take exception to. Momentum soon shifted to the Everblades as they scored three unanswered goals from Brandon MacLean, Matt Beca and Taylor Ellington. Beca and Ellington would both score on the man advantage with Ellington collecting his first of the season, and went into the locker rooms with a 3-1 lead.
The teams would exchange goals in the second period. One minute and 50 seconds into the first the Road Warriors converted on a powerplay goal by Shayne Wiebe who received a pass in the slot from Connolly and Verreault. Just one minute and ten seconds later Roy would respond with a powerplay goal returning to a two goal lead.
The Third period began with the two teams trading goals again. Shayne Wiebe started the flurry of goals with his sixth of the season and second of the game. Florida would respond soon after, this time shorthanded, from MacLean to secure another two goal lead once again. The Everblades took control of the game once again until the Road Warriors leading scorer would break the two goal load again. Brandon Wong would bring the game within one as he scored his 60th goal as a Road Warrior and continued his point streak to 9 games. The Road Warriors began an onslaught of shots and chances that the Everblades could not contain. Jeremy Gouchie would tie the game with just over five minutes left. Gouchie was alone in the slot and collected a pass from Sean Berkstresser and Kyle Haines to fire it past John Muse and force overtime.
Overtime went back and forth with changes and Nathan Lieuwen making big stops that carried over from the third period. The man who opened the scoring, closed it with a goal that beat Muse blocker high to complete the comeback. Connolly would score his sixth of the season and second of the game to beat the Florida Everblades 6-5 in overtime. Muse took the loss stopping 29 of 35 shots. Lieuwen notched his sixth win making 22 saves.
The Road Warriors will embark on a four game road trip that begins Saturday Night in Gwinnett against the South Division leader. Greenville trails the Gladiators by just two points. The game can be heard courtesy of America One or by clicking the Listen Live link on the Road Warriors homepage.
