November 29, 2016 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Connecticut Sun News Release
UNCASVILLE, Conn. - The Connecticut Sun will look to build on last season's strong finish when it tips off its 15th season at Mohegan Sun Arena against the Atlanta Dream May 13th at 7 p.m.
Perennial All-Star Diana Taurasi and reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year Breanna Stewart will each visit twice next summer, highlighting the 2017 schedule for the Sun, who closed with an 11-7 record over the final 18 games of 2016.
"With our talented young roster that will be led by Coach Miller and his dynamic staff, there has never been a more exciting time to be a Sun fan," Sun Vice President Amber Cox said. "This team has the potential to add another memorable chapter to this franchise's rich history in 2017. I'm looking forward to sharing every moment with the best fans in the WNBA as we celebrate our 15th season at Mohegan Sun."
Continuing with the balanced schedule format unveiled last season, each of the WNBA's 12 teams will play three games against 10 different opponents, and four games against one conference rival. This year, Connecticut will face Tina Charles and the New York Liberty four times.
Connecticut - on the road for eight of its first 12 games - follows up its home opener with games against Maya Moore and the Minnesota Lynx on May 26th at 7 p.m., Atlanta on June 10th at 7 p.m. and New York on June 14th at 7 p.m.
"We are excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity to build upon our strong finish to the 2016 season," Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said. "Our young team will be challenged early in the season away from Mohegan Sun Arena. Those challenges will include five of our first seven games on the road and all three of our games versus Minnesota during the first month of the season. Our great fan base will benefit later in the season as we finish the schedule playing eight of our last 11 at home, including seven home games during the month of August."
Taurasi's Phoenix Mercury visit the Sun on August 4th and August 20th. Stewart and the Seattle Storm arrive in Connecticut for an ESPN2-televised game on June 29th, and return on August 8th. Also visiting Connecticut twice in 2017 are Chicago, Dallas and New York.
Connecticut will make two trips to Los Angeles, Minnesota, Indiana, San Antonio and Washington. The defending champion Sparks host the Sun on July 13th and the season finale on September 3rd while Minnesota - the runner-up in 2016 - meet Connecticut at the Target Center on May 23rd and June 17th.
Connecticut plays 11 home games this season on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and will be home for eight of nine games late in the season. That stretch begins with a matchup against Indiana on July 30th at 3 p.m. and concludes with a game against Chicago on August 25th.
