Connecticut Sun News Release
Uncasville, CT - The Connecticut Sun has acquired guards Rebecca Allen, Tyasha Harris and the sixth overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft in a three-team trade with the New York Liberty and the Dallas Wings, the team announced today.
As a part of the deal, the Sun send Jonquel Jones to New York, while the Liberty send Natasha Howard and Crystal Dangerfield to the Wings. New York also acquires Kayla Thornton from Dallas.
"Jonquel has been an integral part of the Connecticut Sun's growth over the last seven years, and we truly appreciate everything she has given to this franchise. Ultimately, JJ's trade was a decision that both parties decided was best. We wish her the best in her future endeavors." - Darius Taylor, Connecticut Sun General Manager
Allen is a seven-year league veteran, having spent her entire career with the Liberty after originally signing as a free agent in 2015. In 2022, the Australian native averaged 7.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and a career-high 1.2 assists per game. She became the 42nd player in WNBA history to amass 100+ career steals, blocks and three-point field goals made after recording her 100th career steal against the Chicago Sky on July 29. Allen has been a member of the Australian National Team since 2014, where she competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and most recently won bronze at the 2022 FIBA World Cup.
"We are excited about the addition of Rebecca Allen to our team. Rebecca is a proven shooter that addresses a need we have. Rebecca's experience, versatility and winning personality will be a welcomed addition to our team. She is a valuable addition that will make an immediate impact." - Darius Taylor, Connecticut Sun General Manager
Harris, originally drafted as the seventh overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, has played three seasons for the Dallas Wings. Over 88 career contests, she has averaged 5.2 points, 1.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 0.5 steals per game. The Michigan native tallied postseason career highs in Dallas's Game 2 win over Connecticut in the opening round of the 2022 playoffs with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal. Harris was a standout point-guard at the University of South Carolina, where she was a four-year starter, won the National Championship in 2017, and picked up All-SEC Second Team and WBCA All-American Honorable Mention honors twice throughout her collegiate career.
"We are excited to welcome Ty Harris to the Connecticut Sun organization. Ty is a rising point guard and an even better person, that will have an opportunity to thrive in Connecticut. We look forward to having her join our organization and watching her growth on and off the court." - Darius Taylor, Connecticut Sun General Manager
