Connecticut Sun News Release
UNCASVILLE, Conn. - The Connecticut Sun announced today that the organization will support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for the second year in a row by hosting its first virtual 5k run/walk over a 12-day span.
Support for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund by the Connecticut Sun is led by point guard Jasmine Thomas. During the 2019 season, Thomas held a sold-out dinner to benefit the cancer fund, which raised nearly $10,000. Her passion and drive for supporting the fund stems from her love for her mom, a breast cancer survivor.
"I'm happy that during this unprecedented time we are able to bring people together through our virtual 5K for BHA and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund," Thomas said. "Raising support for The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to help provide necessary resources for women who need it most."
The virtual 5k run/walk will be a 12-day event that begins on Monday, August 17 and ends on Friday, August 28 when the Connecticut Sun face the Los Angeles Sparks in the team's annual Rock the Pink game. Fans are encouraged to sign-up using the link below and participate in their own, socially-distanced 5k and then share pictures of their participation via their social media channels. One hundred percent of the $20 registration fee will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. To register for the race or to donate, visit https://bit.ly/KayYowVirtual5k.
Once on the registration page, participants can join the Connecticut Sun team or create their own team to share with friends and family. Team fundraising amounts will be displayed on the 5K leaderboard creating friendly competition during the two-week span. Fans are also encouraged to tag the Connecticut Sun and Kay Yow Cancer Fund on social media outlets showing socially distanced participation in the run using the following attributes: @connecticutsun, @kayyowfund, #Play4Kay, #POWERofONE.
The vision of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund is to be the premier non-profit organization dedicated to supporting innovative ways of fighting ALL cancers affecting women, serving the underserved, uniting people for a common cause and providing support through giving strength, courage, and hope. The Fund, founded by the late, legendary North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow, has awarded $7.78M in its 12-year existence.
The Connecticut Sun will gear up to face the Indiana Fever on Tuesday, August 18th at 7pm on NESN+.
