CFL Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Connect with the Tiger-Cats

June 28, 2004 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release

Fans who attend Hamilton Tiger-Cat games at Ivor Wynne Stadium this season, will be able to interact directly with the action on the field from their seats.

FibreWired, the telecommunications division of Hamilton Utilities Corporation, has installed wireless Internet technology services (WiFi) at the stadium and the surrounding area, that will allow fans to connect with the Ticats while the game is in progress.

The WiFi services were installed as part of an ongoing relationship between FibreWired and the new owner of the club.

The free services will be available to anyone who attends a game with a WiFi enabled device, such as a laptop or PDA. Ultimately, fans will be able to watch replays, participate in half-time activities, interact with the new Dofasco TigerVision videoboard, conduct online chats and discussions with other fans as well as purchasing Ticat merchandise.

Ian Collins, president of FibreWired Hamilton, said he is pleased FibreWired is able to provide the service not only to Ticat fans, but also to schoolchildren and their parents in the area.

"As part of FibreWired's on-going support of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, the service will be made available to the surrounding community at the Prince of Wales Public School," Collins pointed out.

"More and more students need to access the Internet to complete their studies. Providing this valuable service to the community around Ivor Wynne Stadium was a challenge we wanted to overcome with the support and partnership of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who envisioned this interactive fan experience," he pointed out.

Tiger-Cats owner Bob Young said the WiFi service is a further step to enable fans to be more closely involved with the team.

"We started with our website, ticats.ca, and have installed the Dofasco TigerVision videoboard. Now, we'll give them the ability to access the scoreboard from their laptops, give them Internet access and a chance to be part of interactive events at halftime," said Young.

John Laverty, Superintendent of Education for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board said, "introducing the wireless Internet gateway to the Prince of Wales school community is an important step forward in reaching out in creative ways. We are delighted to assist the Tiger-Cats in this collaborative venture.
