Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, CA - The Bakersfield Condors of the West Coast Hockey League have announced their 2002 protected list. The West Coast Hockey League allows each team to protect 12 players off of the club's playoff roster. Teams were required to submit the list to the WCHL office by June 1st. All of the players who are left unprotected by their 2001-02 club are free agents, and available to sign with any other team in the WCHL.

If a protected player is not signed already, the Condors are required to make a qualifying offer to each player on the protected list by August 1st. If an offer is made, and the player chooses not to re-sign with Bakersfield, those rights are held until January 1st, 2003, should the player desire to return to the WCHL.
"The protected list isn't necessarily a master list of those who will, or will not, return," said Condors Head Coach Paul Kelly. "It is mainly used to give the teams a head start on the signing season. Players have been signed in the past who were left off the list, and others have been protected that didn't re-sign."
Five players included on the list are currently rated as having Veteran Status for 2002-03. A player who has played in 320 or more professional games, in North America or Europe, is considered a veteran. The limit this season for WCHL clubs is five veteran skaters, and one veteran goaltender. Teams will also be required to field eight developmental players (as having played in less than 160 pro games) on their roster. Four such players have been protected.
