Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors of the West Coast Hockey League held two charity events at their home game on Sunday, a 4-2 victory over the Idaho Steelheads. A team record for jersey auctions was set with the red, white and blue Veteran's Day jerseys, which were sponsored by KUZZ 107.9 and raised over $23,000. Also, nearly 70 toys were donated to the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots drive at the game.
After the hockey game, the players modeled their jerseys at center ice while Condors PA announcer Chris Peace auctioned them off for the Petroleum Shrine Club. The money raised goes directly towards the Shriner's Hospital in Los Angeles, which specializes in treating children with birth defects and burn injuries. Last year, nearly 300 children were treated at the hospital from Kern County, and the money raised will go towards helping those children.
A new team record was set when the final jersey, goaltender Kevin St. Pierre 's jersey, pulled in $3,700 and brought the total for the night to $23,300. The previous record was set two season's ago, when the Metal Blade warm-up jersey auction raised $20,025 for young Mikella McAuley in the spring of 2001.
"We're extremely pleased and very thankful of the Condors fans, for the charity they showed for the Shrine Club," said Vernon David with the Petroleum Shrine Club. "We were absolutely overwhelmed with the results. This is our second jersey auction with the Condors, and they've both been very successful events.
Also on Sunday, the Condors assisted the United States Marine Corps with their annual Toys for Tots drive. Any fan bringing in a new, unwrapped toy received a free terrace ticket to that night's contest. A total of 66 toys were collected, with cash donations as well, making it a busy night for charity at Centennial Garden. Another Toys for Tots night with the Condors will be held on December 14th.
"Both of our selected charities on Sunday are terrific," said Condors President & GM Matthew Riley. "Our fans came up huge with a record-breaking jersey auction, and we owe them a great deal of gratitude. Every year we hold these events to spread good will and give something back to the Bakersfield community and Kern County, and our fans are always there to help us out.
The Condors next game is Friday, when the Fresno Falcons come into town for a 7:00pm start. The Condors are 4-0 this season against their Highway 99 rivals. Everyone in attendance will receive a Condors team photo, sponsored by Time Warner Cable, Real Rock 104.3 and the SBC Pacific Bell Yellow Pages.
Single-game tickets are available through the Centennial Garden Box Office, which opens at 10:00am Monday through Saturday. Tickets may also be purchased by phone through Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at www.ticketmaster.com or at any Ticketmaster location. Season tickets and group outings may be purchased by calling 324-PUCK (7825), or by visiting the Condors office at Centennial Garden.
