Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings starting pitcher Alexander Concepcion shut down the Edinburg Roadrunners on Saturday night at Harlingen Field, striking out eight batters while allowing no runs and just three hits to help deliver a 6-0 win.
Behind the dominant pitching performance, the WhiteWings (40-28) move twelve games ahead .500 and have now won eight of their last ten. The Roadrunners (26-43), meanwhile, stay in last place in the North American League with the loss.
The strong outing from Concepcion moves his record to 7-4. Winning his past three starts, Concepcion has allowed only three earned runs in that time span, going at least seven innings each time. Overall, his ERA dropped a full two runs - plummeting from 7.01 to 5.16 - with his three consecutive strong starts.
All six WhiteWings' runs came against Edinburg Roadrunners starter Julio Castro, who made his first start of the year after serving as the team's closer. Castro is charged with the loss, dropping to 2-1 on the year while his ERA expands to 2.96.
The WhiteWings grabbed an early lead when Eric Gonzalez belted a three-run homerun over the left field wall to stake a 3-0 lead.
David Peralta drove in the next three WhiteWings' runs when he hit an RBI triple in the third before hitting his team-leading 16th homerun, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning to give the WhiteWings a 6-0 lead.
That was all Concepcion needed as the âWings cruised from there, grabbing their 40th win of the year.
The WhiteWings head to first-place San Angelo on Monday for a four-game series. Right handed pitcher Eric Blackwell is expected to start.
