Thunder falls to Colts

EDINBURG, Texas---The McAllen Thunder allowed four runs in the top of the fifth en route to a 7-3 loss to the San Angelo Colts Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Landon Camp got the scoring started for the Colts (43-25) in the top of the second with a leadoff home run that made it 1-0.

The Thunder (28-41) responded in the bottom of the third after Zach Mandelblatt was walked to lead off the inning. Mandelblatt then moved to second on a passed ball and then to third on a single by Adam Matos. Antoin Gray then followed with a sacrifice fly that allowed Mandelblatt to score tying the game at one.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Ronnie Gaines drove in a run with a walk. Cory Patton then hit a two-run single to left field that allowed Trey Carter and Mark Ramos to score. Daryl Jones followed with an RBI single driving in the fourth run of the inning giving San Angelo the 5-1 lead.

Wilson Batista reached on an infield single in the bottom of the sixth then moved to second on a throwing error and then moved to third on a groundout. Luke Hetherington followed with an RBI single to center field that allowed Batista to score making it 5-2 Colts.

McAllen inched closer in the bottom of the seventh. Matos led off with a single and then a wild pitch allowed him to move to second. With two outs, Yaibel Tamayo hit an RBI double to left center field driving in Matos from second and cutting the San Angelo lead 5-3.

San Angelo added an insurance run in the top of the eighth against reliever Garret Granitz. Jones started the inning with a walk and then moved to third on a fielding error that put runners on the corners. An RBI groundout by Clay Calfee allowed Jones to score pushing their lead to 6-3.

After the Colts added a run in the top of the ninth, Josh Giles came in an pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth giving San Angelo the 6-3 victory.

Logan Williamson (10-1) pitched six and two-third innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on 10 hits and struck out eight.

The Thunder have Sunday night off before opening a four-game series against the Edinburg Roadrunners on Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
