Kansas City Comets News Release
FLINT, Mich. - Following a thirty-minute delay at the Dort Federal Event Center due to inclement weather, the Missouri Comets (9-1) were able to add another victory to their record after defeating the Waza Flo (4-4) 8-5 in the first matchup between both sides in league history.
With two goals, two assists and four points, team captain and MASL leader Vahid Assadpour was named Borden Man of the Match.
Despite the delayed kick off, Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team came out to the field strong, focused and with an offensive mindset, which led to the first tally of the contest when defender Brian Harris found Assadpour who beat goalkeeper Rafael Dias. Moments later, Robert Palmer found the back of the net with a rocket assisted by Lucas Rodriguez ending the first quarter 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Less than four minutes into the second stanza, league MVP Leo Gibson extended the lead to three with a masterpiece. He dribbled past two defenders and the goalie before simply tapping the ball in. However, the home side answered four minutes later with a power play goal via Leonardo de Oliveira ending the half 3-1.
Once again, Missouri stepped on the field with an attacking mentality and dominated the field. Throughout the third, Kiel Williams, Assadpour and Ramone Palmer each scored to extend the lead to five but coach and player Costea Decu scored his fifth of the season to end the half 6-2.
The fourth and final quarter saw both teams combine for a total of five goals throughout the last fifteen minutes. The Comets scored their seventh of the night at the 3:51 mark via Rodriguez but Waza Flo's Zach Bowman got one back four minutes later but Rodriguez completed his brace on the power play.
With four minutes left in the match, the Waza Flo put in a sixth attacker to put pressure on the Comets who were unable to keep their goal unbeaten resulting in two goals from Danny Dragoi and Nik Djokic but their comeback efforts weren't enough as they ran out of time to end the match 8-5.
Next up, the Comets return home to the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena on Tuesday, December 29 as they host the St. Louis Ambush in the last of three meetings this season. For tickets, call 855-4KC-GOAL or visit ticketmaster.com.
