St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (June 25, 2015) - The Bradenton Marauders escaped a huge jam in the ninth inning and held on to edge the St. Lucie Mets 4-3 on Thursday at Tradition Field.
The game was the first in the Florida State League's second half. The Mets are 0-1 while the Marauders are 1-0. The Mets are 35-36 overall and have lost five of their last six.
New York Mets infielder Daniel Murphy, rehabbing from a left quad strain, made the start at third base and played seven innings. He went 0 for 3 at the plate with three fly outs and one walk.
The Mets entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-2 and had a chance to tie it. Jeff Glenn hit a one-out double and Jeff McNeil followed with a walk. After a long fly out to right field allowed Glenn and McNeil to move up a base, Matt Oberste came up and hit a two-out RBI infield single that made it 4-3.
McNeil crashed into third baseman Wyatt Mathisen on his way to third base and was not called out by interference despite a vehement argument by Marauders manager Michael Ryan, who was ejected.
McNeil remained on third base as the tying run, but Dominic Smith flew out to Harold Ramirez in right field to end the game.
The Mets took a 2-0 lead by scoring a run in the second and another in the third. Starter Miller Diaz kept the 2-0 lead until the wheels fell off in the top of seventh.
Diaz gave up an RBI single to Michael Fransoso to make it 2-1. Then he plunked JaCoby Jones to load the bases. He fell behind Austin Meadows 3-0 before fighting back to make the count full. However, Diaz ended up walking Meadows anyways to force in the tying run.
With the bases reloaded, Ramirez laced a two-run single into right field to make it 4-2.
Newly added reliever David Roseboom took over and kept the Marauder from piling on by pitching 2.1 scoreless innings. But the Mets offense was unable to come all the way back.
Ramirez led the Marauders by going 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Starter Cody Dickson walked six batters but only allowed two runs in six innings.
Isaac Sanchez got the save for Bradenton.
Oberste had three hits for the Mets.
The Mets and Marauders wrap up their quick two-game series on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Tradition Field. It's Bark in the Park Night. All dogs get into the berm for $2. Proceeds go to the St. Lucie County Humane Society.
