Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (June 25, 2015) - The Fort Myers Miracle scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning for a comeback victory, 2-1, over the Charlotte Stone Crabs to begin the Florida State League second half on Thursday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
Trailing 1-0 after eight shutout frames tossed by Stone Crabs starter Chris Kirsch, Charlotte manager Michael Johns went to the bullpen and called on Brad Scheiber. A perfect 17-for-17 in save situations this season, Schreiber (0-1) opened the door for the Miracle by walking Engelb Vielma. Then, an errant pick-off attempt and throwing error by Schreiber moved Vielma up to second base.
Rallying to strike out Jason Kanzler, Vielma advanced to third on a ground out from Ryan Walker. With two outs, Alex Swim stepped up and roped a 1-1 triple into the right field corner. Vielma scored easily as Swim raced around and slid in safely to third base. Marcus Knecht came up to the plate next. Schreiber's 1-0 pitch glanced off catcher Maxx Tissenbaum's glove and to the back stop. Swim sped home and slid in before Schreiber could apply the tag on a feed from Tissenbaum, 2-1.
D.J. Johnson entered the game in the in the ninth inning bidding for the save. Johnson faced four hitters and retired the side, stranding one and picking up a strikeout to earn his second save of the season.
The Stone Crabs jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the 3rd. Pat Blair hit a sinking line drive into center field with one out off Miracle starter Aaron Slegers. Jason Kanzler made a layout bid, but could not catch the ball and Blair hustled to second base for a double. Slegers got Braxton Lee to ground out to the left side and Blair moved up to third base. Former Major League veteran Grady Sizemore then sharply struck a ground ball to first. Bryan Haar could not glove the grounder and Blair scored on the error, 1-0.
The unearned run would be the only blemish for Slegers on the evening in a brilliant start. Over seven frames in a no decision, Slegers allowed just five hits and struck out eight with no walks. Corey Williams tossed a perfect eighth and picked up the win. Williams (3-0) recorded one strikeout.
Kirsch was in line for the win for Charlotte until Schreiber blew his first save opportunity of the year. Over eight innings, Kirsch gave up two hits and one walk while tallying five punch outs.
Extending a season-best winning streak, the Miracle have now picked up eight consecutive victories and put 14 of the last 16 games in the win column.
The quick 1-and-1 series with the Stone Crabs (45-25, 0-1) continues on Friday night at Hammond Stadium with the Miracle (38-32, 1-0) taking the field at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the first 750 fans will receive a Miracle cap courtesy of Earth Elements Landscape and Supply and Y100.
