Clearwater Threshers News Release
DUNEDIN, Fla. - Malquin Canelo blasted a two-run homer in his 2015 Threshers debut, and Clearwater outlasted the Dunedin Blue Jays in an 8-7, 10-inning victory at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Canelo finished 2-for-6 in his first game since joining the Threshers from Low-A Lakewood, where he hit .311 with five home runs. Rhys Hoskins was 1-for-4 with two walks in his High-A debut.
Clearwater has now won six consecutive games for the first time this season, after the Threshers wrapped up their first half run with five straight wins to clinch the North.
The Threshers battled closely with Dunedin throughout, but found themselves down 7-6 entering the ninth.
Hoskins drew a four-pitch free pass off reliever Alberto Tirado (2-1) to open the frame. Chase Numata came up clutch and delivered the game-tying hit, shooting a double that split the gap in right-center to bring around Hoskins and knot the game up at seven.
Jesen Therrien (3-0) allowed a leadoff single to Matt Dean in the bottom half, but racked up back-to-back strikeouts to settle things down. Dean stole second and Derrick Loveless was intentionally walked, but Therrien got Martin Medina to bounce one to Mitch Walding at third to end the inning.
Chase Harris wasted no time in the 10th, pulling a single through the left side to put the go-ahead on with nobody out. Harris stole second an out later - his team-leading 12th steal of the year - but Tirado got Carlos Tocci to fly out to left for the second out.
That set the table for Aaron Brown, whose game-winning hits on consecutive days in the St. Lucie series were turning points in the Threshers rally to win the first half. Brown delivered once again, grounding a 2-2 pitch through the left side to score Harris and boost Clearwater to the 8-7 lead.
Miguel Nunez entered in the bottom of the 10th, and locked down the first save of his career. Nunez issued a two-out walk, but nothing more in a scoreless final frame.
The Threshers will return home to wrap up the two-game series on Friday, when the Threshers host the Blue Jays on 90's Night at Bright House Field. Victor Arano (0-7) toes the rubber against Jairo Labourt (2-4), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 p.m.
A post-game dance party will take place at the tiki bar as part of the Threshers Summer Concert Series, presented by Leinenkugel and New Belgium. Tickets can be purchased here or at the Threshers box office.
