Altoona Curve News Release

AKRON, Ohio - The Altoona Curve came back to take a, 4-3, lead in the sixth inning but Akron answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and hung on to defeat Altoona, 6-5, on Monday night at Canal Park. Jeremy Farrell continued his hot hitting for the Curve, driving in three runs while going 2-for-4.

Trailing 6-5 heading into the ninth, Altoona got a leadoff double from Starling Marte to start the frame and set up the possibility of a game-tying situation. Jordy Mercer followed Marte and was called out on strikes for the first out of the inning. Tony Sanchez grounded out to third while Marte remained at second. Cory Burns, who earned his third save in just five games, struck out Miles Durham for the final out to end the threat and the game.

Altoona led, 4-3, at one point in the contest thanks to Farrell, who capped a four-run sixth inning with a two-run triple that brought home Sanchez and Durham. After a clean sixth from Tim Alderson (0-1), Akron answered in the seventh inning off the Curve right hander.

Alderson struck out Karexon Sanchez to start the frame and then surrendered a bunt-single to Jordan Henry with one away. Rehabbing Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore followed Henry's single with a single of his own and there were two on with one down.

Jason Donald, also on a rehab assignment with Akron, hit a ball to Brock Holt at second and Holt tried to go to second base with the throw for the out but his momentum carried him away from the bag and his throw was just wide of Mercer. The errant throw allowed Henry to score and tie the game at four. Alderson got Juan Diaz to ground out on a drawn-in infield for the second out but Chun Chen doubled into deep right to bring home Sizemore and Donald and give Akron a two-run lead.

Farrell pulled the Curve within one in the eighth with a two-out RBI double that brought home Quincy Latimore. The Curve third baseman now has seven RBI in his first five games.

Marte finished the game 3-for-5 and now has nine hits over his last three games.

Starter Aaron Pribanic completed five innings in his first Double-A start, giving up three runs on five hits. Alderson gave up the three unearned runs over his two innings of relief while Tom Boleska worked a scoreless eighth inning.

Bryan Price (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Aeros.

Altoona (2-3) and Akron (3-2) will play the second game of the three-game set tomorrow beginning at 7:05 p.m. from Canal Park in Akron. Opening Day starters Bryan Morris (0-0, 4.15) and Kelvin de la Cruz (0-1, 1.80) will match up in the second game. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
