DESTROYERS Last Week
Columbus Destroyers 46
Philadelphia Soul 45
PHILADELPHIA - Nothing like having last second drama... twice.

Philadelphia Soul kicker Todd France missed a 42-yard field goal, twice, as time expired and the Columbus Destroyers held on to beat the Philadelphia Soul 46-45 in front of 14,918 fans at Wachovia Center on Friday night. The win is the sixth of the season for the Destroyers, which ties a franchise record. It also was the first season series sweep of the Soul, as Columbus defeated Philadelphia earlier this season, 53-20.

With less than a minute to go in the game, Destroyers quarterback John Kaleo rushed in from 1-yard out on third down to cut the Soul lead to 45-44. Rather than kick the extra point and tie the game up, Destroyers coach Doug Kay elected to go for two.

The move paid off, as Kaleo scrambled from pressure and found wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders in the front corner of the end zone to give the Destroyers a 46-45 lead with 40 seconds remaining.

The Soul tried to mount a comeback and marched to their 24-yard line with 0:04 left. France then attempted a 42-yard field goal, but Columbus called timeout right before the snap. France missed the first kick off the right net. His second attempt missed in almost the identical spot. B.J. Barre took the ball off the net and got outside of the end zone to seal the win.

Offensive specialist Darcey Levy took home Offensive Player of the Game honors after he caught seven passes for 88 yards and three scores. Defensive specialist Brandon Hefflin won ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors after he recorded a game-high 7.5 tackles (5UT-5AT) and recovered a fumble.

Kaleo arguably had his best game of the season as he completed 28-of-44 passes for 315 yards and four touchdowns, while throwing no interceptions. He rushed for a score, as well.

The Soul started the game off right after Mike Brown took the opening kickoff and returned it 57 yards to give Philadelphia a 7-0 lead right off the bat. The teams fumbled a combined four times in the first quarter as Philadelphia led 14-0 after the first frame.

Brown finished the night with six kickoff returns for 196 yards, two touchdowns, added four pass receptions for 64 yards and a pair of scores, as well as four solo tackles on defense to take home Ironman of the Game honors.
THIS WEEK's OPPONENT

The Austin Wranglers are an up and coming football team in the Arena Football League. After going 6-10 in each of their first two seasons of play, the Wranglers started the 2006 season off with a bang, winning their first four games and five of their first six, which included a five-game road trip.

Austin was unanimously approved to play in the AFL on Sept. 5, 2003. A mere 10 days later, Austin announced that the team name would be the Wranglers and compete in the 2004 AFL season.

After hiring Skip Foster, one of the arenafootball2 league's winningest coaches including a 2003 ArenaCup championship, the team started to take shape.

The team hit the field for the first time in history on Feb. 13, 2004, in "The Jungle" against the Orlando Predators, which Austin won, 49-48 in overtime. A week later, the Wranglers won their first home game in history, a 56-48 win over the defending ArenaBowl champion Tampa Bay Storm at the Frank Erwin Center.

LAST MEETING WITH AUSTIN

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In a game that saw five ties and the Columbus Destroyers rally from a double-digit deficit three times, the Austin Wrangles escaped Nationwide Arena with a 58-55 victory in front of a crowd of 14,064 on Saturday, Apr. 30.

Wranglers' kicker Todd Sievers connected on a 22-yard field goal as time expired to give Austin the win. The Destroyers had tied the game at 55-55 when quarterback Ryan Vena found wide receiver/linebacker Cornelius White on a five-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds remaining.

Austin led by scores of 20-7, 27-13 and 55-41, but Columbus battled back to tie the game, each time. The 55-41 lead came with 6:34 left after Dane Krager rushed in from 1-yard out. Offensive specialist Damien Groce returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 55-48.

Groce took home Offensive Player of the Game honors after he caught seven passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. He also added three kickoff returns for a combined 92 yards and a touchdown.

Vena finished the night completing 20-of-35 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. Vena rushed five times for 15 yards and a pair of scores. Fullback/linebacker Wilmont Perry led the team in rushing with 19 yards and one touchdown.

DROP BACK
The Columbus Destroyers trailed the Philadelphia Soul 28-7 with 4 minutes, 40 seconds to go in the second quarter, but rallied to pull within 45-44 when quarterback John Kaleo rushed in from 1-yard out on third down and 0:40 left in the game. Kaleo then hit wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders in the front corner of the end zone on the two-point conversion attempt to give the Destroyers a 46-45 lead. Philadelphia kicker Todd France had two chances at a game-winning, 42-yard field goal as time expired, but missed both attempts off the right net, and gave the Destroyers the win. The first attempt by France was negated by a Destroyers' timeout prior to the snap. The win tied a franchise record for wins in a season with six, and also was the first season series sweep of the Soul.

FORWARD MOTION
The Destroyers will return home for their final regular season home game on Saturday, May 6, when they host the Tampa Bay Storm (6-7). Kickoff on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena is set for 7 p.m. (ET). The game will match former coaching mates, Destroyers head coach and former Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Doug Kay and Tampa Bay head coach Tim Marcum. The duo worked together in 1993 to help the Storm claim the ArenaBowl VII championship. The two have faced each other four times as opposing head coaches. The Destroyers and Storm have met four times in history with the Storm holding a 4-0 edge. The last time the teams met came on the final week of the 2005 season. The Destroyers led 20-7 after the first quarter of play, but were unable to hold on and fell 78-53 in front of 12,990 fans at Nationwide Arena.

HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Destroyers hired Doug Kay as head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay also has coached the Charlotte Rage (1995) and the Carolina Cobras (2000-01). Through 13 games of the 2006 season, Kay has guided the Destroyers to a 6-7 record.

SKIP FOSTER: In his third season as head coach, Skip Foster has been the only head coach in Austin Wranglers history. After guiding the Wranglers to identical 6-10 records his first two seasons, he started the 2006 season winning the first four and five of the first six, which included a five-game road trip. Foster is one of the af2's winningest coaches with a record of record of 44-10.
FRANCHISE RECORDS TIED
The Columbus Destroyers had one of the best weekends in franchise history this past Friday night at Philadelphia. The team tied a few franchise records in the 46-45 victory over the Soul. The Destroyers tied the franchise mark for wins in a season, with six. The 2001 and 2002 Buffalo Destroyers as well as the 2004 Columbus Destroyers all had six wins in a season. The win also was the third road win of the season for the Destroyers, which tied the franchise mark set by the 2004 Columbus Destroyers. The team still has two road games remaining on the schedule to break the record. The win over Philadelphia was the second win of the season over the Soul and is the first season series sweep of a team this year. It marks the fourth season series sweep of a team in franchise history. It was the first season series sweep since the 2002 season, when the Buffalo Destroyers swept the New Jersey Gladiators and Toronto Phantoms. The other season series sweep came in 2001, when Buffalo swept the New Jersey Red Dogs.

PLAYOFF PUSH ALIVE AND WELL
With this past weekend's 46-45 victory over the Philadelphia Soul, the Destroyers put themselves right back in the thick of the playoff hunt. At 6-7, Columbus is tied with Tampa Bay for the seventh spot in the National Conference, one game out of the playoffs. Both teams have three games left in the season, including a match-up against each other in Week 15. Tampa Bay currently holds the head-to-head match-up between the teams based on wins over common opponents, but the May 6th game will determine the tie-breaker. Two of the three games remaining on the club's schedule are against playoff teams.

RECORD BROKEN
Columbus defensive specialist Jerald Brown set a Destroyers single-season record two weeks ago when he intercepted a pass in the first quarter against New York. It was Brown's ninth of the season, which breaks the previous record set by Dwaine Carpenter, who intercepted eight passes in the 2003 campaign. Brown was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game for his performance. He added to that total this past weekend, when he intercepted his tenth pass of the season, which ranks tops in the Arena Football League. He is on pace for 12, which would rank as second-best in AFL history. Brown also has been a force elsewhere, as he has recorded 51.0 tackles (42UT-18AT), nine pass breakups and a fumble recovery returned 40 yards for a touchdown.

GO FOR TWO
The Columbus Destroyers have had quite a bit of success on extra point attempts, not only with kicker Mark Lewis, but on two-point conversions as well. On the season, the Destroyers have gone 4-of-6 on two-point conversions, including this past weekend's conversion from John Kaleo to David Saunders for the game-winning score.
THE PLAYOFF RACE HAS STARTED
With three games remaining in the 2006 season, the final games of the season will impact the playoff picture more so each week, especially in the National Conference. Two of the nine teams have identical 8-5 records and two others are tied with records of 7-5. The two division winners receive a first-round bye with the third seed hosting the sixth seed and the fourth seed hosting the fifth seed in the Wild Card Round. If the playoffs were to start today, the Destroyers would miss the playoffs by one game. Below is the National Conference playoff picture through Week 12. The "y" indicates if the team has clinched a playoff spot.

NINE IS JUST FINE
Destroyers' wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders cannot be kept out of the end zone, even on two-point conversions. In his past nine consecutive games, Saunders has caught at least one touchdown pass. In this past Friday's win over Philadelphia, Saunders caught six passes for 63 yards and a touchdown. After the Destroyers pulled within 45-44, it was Saunders who worked his way open on the two-point conversion, which he caught in the front corner of the end zone to give the Destroyers a 46-45 lead. The Destroyers held on for the win. Saunders has jumped to the top of the Destroyers receiving chart, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. For the season, Saunders has 58 receptions for 666 yards and 14 touchdowns.

KICKER GETS HIS KICKS
Even with a nagging injury to his kicking foot, kicker Mark Lewis has continued to be consistent lately. This past weekend against Philadelphia, Lewis drilled all five of his extra point attempts and added a 29-yard field goal. Lewis has now made 32 consecutive extra points, which ties his personal best. On the season, Lewis has made 45-of-48 extra points and 15-of-24 field goals. He leads the League in extra point kicking percentage (94.3 percent) and is second in field goals made. Lewis is third in field goal percentage (62.5 percent). All of this while playing in only 10-of-13 games.
TALK ABOUT A CLOSE "ONE"
In the game of Arena Football, a lot of times, games are decided by a narrow margin. For the first 10 games of the season, the Destroyers had not had a game decided by 10 points or less. The past three games have been the exact opposite, including this past weekend's win over Philadelphia. The 46-45 victory was the closest of the season, and fourth time in history a Destroyers game has been decided by a single point. It was the Destroyers first one-point contest decided on the road and first one-point win since the team moved to Columbus in 2004. In 2005, the Destroyers lost 56-55 to the New York Dragons on Mar. 26, and lost 54-53 to Carolina on Feb. 13, 2004. The win over Philadelphia was the second win for the Destroyers in a game decided by one point. The first came on Apr. 26, 2003, a 36-35 win over Indiana.

CLOSING IN ON THE RECORD
As the Destroyers hit the final three regular season games of the 2006 campaign, different players are closing in on or have set a Destroyers' single-season or career record. John Kaleo is within reach of a few passing records. He is on pace to crush the record for passes attempted in a season. Jim Kubiak set the record in 2001 with 484 attempts, but Kaleo is on pace to attempt 521 passes, one shy of the career record of 522 set by Ryan Vena (2004-05). Kaleo also is on pace to set the season record for pass completions. Kubiak holds the current mark of 295, but Kaleo has completed 255 passes already this season. He is on pace to complete 314 passes, 12 shy of the career mark set by Vena.

Flipping to the defensive side of the ball, fumbles forced and fumbles recovered is a popular record that has fell or is falling this season. Brandon Hefflin forced three fumbles in 2005, only to have that mark tied this season by Ken Jones. The record is not that safe, however. B.J. Barre and Kelvin Kinney both have two forced fumbles to their credit. If that record isn't jumbled enough, fumbles recovered is even more jumbled. Hefflin and Chris Pope recovered two fumbles in 2005, and five players have recovered two fumbles this season, but Hefflin broke the record this past weekend when he recovered his third.

The record for sacks in a season is 5.5, set by Kerwin Hairston in 2001. Kinney and Jones are both hot on the trail of Hairston. Jones currently has 4.0 sacks while Kinney has 3.5. Jerald Brown set the interception record for the season, but also has broken the interception return yards record with 133 return yards this season.

FAMILIAR FACES
Five former Destroyers are now a part of the Austin organization. Offensive/defensive lineman Donovan Arp (2003-04) and Marcus McKenzie (2004), as well as defensive specialist Donvetis Franklin (2005), wide receiver/defensive back Sedrick Robinson (2004-05) and wide receiver/linebacker Sir Mawn Wilson (2006 Training Camp) are now members of the Wranglers.

Continuing in 2006, fans are asked to bring non-perishable food items to each home game at Nationwide Arena for donation to the Mid-Ohio FoodBank. In turn, fans will receive one raffle ticket per donated food item for a chance to win a team-autographed, authentic AFL football. One winner will be announced during the fourth quarter of each game.
