The Destroyers will now face the Arena Football League's best team, the Dallas Deperados, who have the AFL's top record at 7-2.
The Destroyers and Desperados have met once this season on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena. The Destroyers fell behind early and were unable to overcome a 45-21 third quarter, Desperados lead. Dallas won the game 52-38.
The Desperados have been solid on the road this season with a record of 5-0 away from home. But the team has struggled in the friendly confines of American Airlines Center, sporting a 2-2 record, which includes a loss this past weekend to the Philadelphia Soul.

DESTROYERS Last Week
Columbus Destroyers 65
Colorado Crush 21
DENVER - Home, not so sweet home.
The Columbus Destroyers forced the defending ArenaBowl Champion Colorado Crush into seven turnovers and held them to their lowest point total in franchise history en route to a 65-21 win in front of 17,146 fans at the Pepsi Center on Saturday night. It was the first time the Crush has lost at home this season and only the second time in their past 11 home games.
Destroyers' defensive specialist Brandon Hefflin took home Defensive Player of the Game honors when he recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass while adding a game high 13.5 tackles (13UT-1AT) to lead the Destroyers defensive attack.
Wide receiver/linebacker Thabiti Davis was named Ironman of the Game after he caught four passes for 43 yards and a touchdown and added a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown, as well as two tackles (2UT) and a tackle for a loss on defense.
Destroyers' quarterback John Kaleo earned Offensive Player of the Game honors after he completed 16-of-26 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for two more.
It was the Destroyers' defense again, stepping up to the challenge. Defensive specialist Jerald Brown intercepted his eighth pass of the season, which ties a Destroyers' single-season-best, at the Destroyers' 3-yard line and returned it to the 12 in the first quarter. It was the fifth time in the past six games that he's intercepted a pass.
Three plays later, Kaleo found wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders from 18-yards out to give the Destroyers a 7-0 lead with 7 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The defense came up big again, forcing the Crush to attempt a 55-yard field goal, which kicker Clay Rush missed off the left net. The Destroyers marched down the field, and Kaleo capped the drive with a 1-yard run to make it 17-7.
On the ensuing kickoff, Crush wide receiver/defensive back Willis Marshall thought he had a clear path to the end zone, but offensive/defensive lineman Howard Duncan hit him from behind and jarred the ball loose, which was recovered by Hefflin at the 15-yard line. Three plays later, rookie fullback/linebacker Harold Wells added to his team-lead in rushing touchdowns with his fifth of the year, this from a yard out, and the rout was on.
THIS WEEK's OPPONENT
The Dallas Desperados entered the League in 2002 and played their first game on April 20. They opened their inaugural season with a 57-44 victory over the Carolina Cobras in Raleigh, N.C.
In three seasons of play, the Desperados have accumulated a 26-26-1 record and with a 7-2 start to the 2006 season, the Desperados have an even .500 mark in their franchise history.
Dallas started its season off with three straight victories, but fell in Week 4 to in-state rival Austin. The Wranglers (6-3) won the game 56-49.
Since then, the Desperados have gone on another run, winning four straight until this past weekend. The Desperados fell victim to the Philadelphia Soul, again at home, by a narrow 55-51 margin. With a 7-2 record, the Desperados have the best record in the AFL.
The Desperados are led by head coach Will McClay, who is in his second season. McClay came up one game short of coaching the Desperados to their third playoff berth.
Under center for the Desperados this season is Clint Dolezel, who is in his 11th season in the League. He joined the Desperados from Las Vegas after Clint Stoerner departed for Nashville.
LAST MEETING WITH DALLAS
COLUMBUS, Ohio - It was a back and forth game between the Columbus Destroyers and Dallas Desperados on Saturday, Feb. 11. But after the dust settled, the Desperados found themselves on top with a 52-38 victory in front of 12,286 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena.
The Desperados jumped out to a 14-3 lead after a quarter of play. The lead was short lived as the Destroyers battled back to take a 24-21 lead and the teams entered halftime tied at 24-24.
But the Desperados took control in the second half, outscoring the Destroyers 21-0 in the third quarter to build an insurmountable lead.
Four different receivers caught touchdown passes for the Destroyers. Wide receiver/linebackers Thabit Davis and Eddie Galles, as well as wide receiver/defensive backs Ira Gooch and B.J. Barre all had a touchdown reception.
Galles and Barre added fumble recoveries in the loss.

DESTROYERS NOTABLES
DROP BACK
The Columbus Destroyers' defense had its second consecutive week of shutting down one of the Arena Football League's top offenses as they forced seven turnovers and held the Colorado Crush to a franchise-low in points in a 65-21 victory in front of 17, 416 fans at the Pepsi Center Saturday night. It was the Destroyers' fourth win in their past five games and second straight week they held a team to a franchise low in points scored. Defensive specialist Brandon Hefflin led the defensive charge with a game-high 13.5 tackles (13UT-1AT), recovered two fumbles and had an interception.
FORWARD MOTION
Following Saturday's Eastern Division battle against Dallas, the Destroyers will return home to Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena on Sunday, Apr. 9. Kickoff against the Orlando Predators is set for 3 p.m. In history, Columbus and Orlando have met five times overall and four times during the regular season. The Predators hold a 4-1 edge overall and a 3-1 record during the regular season. The teams have not met since Apr. 4, 2004, when the Predators defeated the Destroyers 55-46 in front of 16,020 fans at Nationwide Arena.
HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Destroyers hired Doug Kay as head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay also has coached the Charlotte Rage (1995) and the Carolina Cobras (2000-01). Through eight games of the 2006 season, Kay has guided the Destroyers to a 5-4 record and has the team tied for second in the Eastern Division race.
WILL McCLAY: In his second season as the Desperados head man, McClay is coming off a 2005 season in which he just missed guiding the Desperados to the playoffs. McClay joined the Desperados in 2002 as the first defensive coordinator in team history, which he helped the team two back-to-back playoff appearances in their first two seasons. McClay also has worked with the Dallas Cowboys scouting department as well as holding jobs in the NFL, XFL and AFL. McClay played for the Detroit Drive during the 1989-92 seasons and has won three ArenaBowl titles as a player.
SOPHOMORE SENSATION
Destroyers' defensive specialist Brandon Hefflin had arguably the best game of his Arena Football career Saturday night. The second-year player from Toledo (Ohio) had a game and career-high 13.5 tackles (13UT-1AT), two fumble recoveries and an interception to take home ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors. Hefflin also was named the AFL's ADT Defensive Player of the Week. The interception came on the Colorado Crush's first drive of the game and was the first of seven turnovers forced by the Destroyers. It was a career-best in tackles for Hefflin, who in seven games leads the team in tackles with 36.0 (29UT-14-AT), and has two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a pass breakup.
WHY THEY ARE THE BEST
The Destroyers' defense has been solid all season long, ranking in the Top 5 in the AFL in every defensive category. But as of late, neither the Philadelphia Soul nor Colorado Crush offenses could solve the Destroyers' defensive scheme. In Week 8 against the Soul, the Destroyers forced five Soul turnovers and held Philadelphia to 20 points. It was the second fewest points a Destroyers team has allowed and the fewest points scored in franchise history for the Soul. The Destroyers' defense followed that performance with an even better showing against the defending ArenaBowl champions. Columbus forced the Crush into seven turnovers and held them to a franchise-worst 21 points. The Destroyers lead the League in scoring defense (41.0), interceptions (15), turnover margin (plus-12) and are second in fumbles recovered (14) and rank third in total defense (254.9).
BROWN CONTINUES TO DELIVER
When it comes to intercepting passes, Destroyers defensive specialist Jerald Brown has become an expert. For the fifth time in the past six games, Brown had at least one interception. It was his eighth of the season, which ties him for the Destroyers' single-season record set by Dwaine Carpenter during the 2003 campaign. Brown also is on pace to set the Arena Football League's single-season record. The current record of 13, held by San Jose's Clevan Thomas, who set the record in 2003, is in jeopardy. Brown currently is on pace to intercept 14 passes this season. On the season, Brown has 34.0 tackles (26UT-16AT), seven pass breakups and a 40-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
ROOKIE LEADS TEAM
Rookie fullback/linebacker Harold Wells continues to have a breakout season, his first in Arena Football. In just seven games, Wells has rushed 21 times for 69 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. He is tied for sixth-best in the AFL in rushing touchdowns. Wells is just behind veteran Leroy Thompson in rushing yards. In seven games, Thompson has rushed 28 times for 78 yards and two scores. Wells is just ahead of quarterback John Kaleo in rushing touchdowns. Kaleo is second with five.
THE PLAYOFF RACE HAS STARTED
With seven games remaining in the 2006 season, each and every game becomes more and more important, especially in the National Conference. Six of the nine teams have identical 5-4 records and are tied for the third playoff spot. The two division winners receive a first-round bye with the third seed hosting the sixth seed and the fourth seed hosting the fifth seed in the Wild Card Round. If the playoffs were to start today, the Destroyers would be in as the sixth seed, and would travel to Philadelphia to take on the Soul. Below is the National Conference playoff picture through Week 9. The "x" indicates the divisional leaders.

FROM OS TO WR/LB, DAVIS HAS IT COVERED
Regardless of what position Thabiti Davis plays, he performs at the top of his game. Davis started the season off as the team's offensive specialist and has since moved to the wide receiver/linebacker position. This past weekend was one of Davis' best performances at the latter position. He caught four passes for 43 yards and a touchdown on offense. From the "jack" linebacker position on defense, Davis halted the Crush inside their own 10-yard line when he intercepted a John Dutton pass and returned it 45 yards, untouched, for a touchdown. Davis was named Ironman of the Game for his performance.
SPEAKING OF INTERCEPTIONS
It has almost become a rarity as of late if the Destroyers do not intercept at least one pass a game. The defense picking off a pass has become so common that they have intercepted at least two passes in five of their past six games and have a 4-1 in those games. On the season, the team has intercepted 15 passes, including three this past weekend. The 15 interceptions are good enough for tops in the Arena Football League. Defensive specialist Jerald Brown leads the team with eight interceptions, which ties a Destroyers single season record.
ON THE GROUND AND THROUGH THE AIR
Destroyers quarterback John Kaleo is one of the Arena Football League's all-time greatest quarterbacks. He is one of only five quarterbacks in League history to pass for over 30,000 yards and 500 touchdowns in his career. But Kaleo has been just as productive on the ground. Entering the 2006 season, Kaleo had rushed for 48 touchdowns. Earlier this season he rushed for his 50th career score. Kaleo added to that total this past weekend against the Crush when he rushed for two scores. On the season, Kaleo is second on the team in rushing touchdowns with five and now has 53 for his career. Kaleo continued his success under center, passing for 1,829 yards and 30 touchdowns on 159-of-257 passing.
GIVE US THE BALL
The talk around Destroyers camp is defense, as it should be, as the team has shut down opposing offenses as of late. The reason for their success might have to deal with the fact that the team is forcing turnovers at an alarming rate. This past weekend against the Crush, the Destroyers forced seven turnovers, which was a franchise-worst for Colorado. In the past two weeks, the Destroyers have forced two of the top offenses in the League into 12 turnovers, while only coughing the ball up once. On the season, the Destroyers are plus-12 in the turnover margin category, which is tops in the League. On the season, the Destroyers have forced 29 turnovers (14 fumbles, 15 interceptions). The team is on pace to crush the Destroyers single season record for interceptions of 22 (set in 2003) as they are on pace for 27 interceptions this season.
LINEMEN GETTING IN ON THE ACTION
A lot of the defensive credit has to go to the Destroyers' linemen. The offensive/defensive linemen have helped the Destroyers be effective on both sides of the ball. The linemen have kept opposing defenses off quarterback John Kaleo, allowing him plenty of time to pass. On the flip side, the linemen are getting after opposing quarterbacks in a hurry, not allowing them ample time to throw and forcing them into interceptions and incomplete passes. This past weekend, Ken Jones got in on the action in the fourth quarter when he sacked Crush backup quarterback Todd Hammel and knocked the ball loose. Destroyers lineman Chris Janek fell on the ball and got up with hopes of making it to the end zone. He fell just shy of scoring. After a 10-yard return, Janek set up the Destroyers on the Crush 4-yard line. The next play, the Destroyers scored for the final time to make it 65-21.
FAMILIAR FACES
For only the third time this season, the Destroyers will not have a familiar face on the opposite side of the field. In seven of the Destroyers' first nine games, they have faced off against at least one player or coach who has either played or coached for the Buffalo or Columbus Destroyers. Two weeks ago, the Destroyers saw Soul offensive coordinator Jim Kubiak face his former team.
