Columbia Silences Edenton's Bats

EDENTON, NC - The Steamers (35-17, 17-9) managed just two hits as Griffin Jones struck out 12 over his six innings of work to lead the Columbia Blowfish (31-21, 14-10) to a 6-2 victory on Tuesday night at Historic Hicks Field.
Kevin Bibler (Southern Polytechnic State University) and Griffin Jones traded zeros through the first two innings until Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the third to score DJ Johnson (Mercer University) and give Edenton a 1-0 lead. For Kanzler it was his fourth triple of the season.
Jones, for Columbia was dominant, he struck out six batters through his first two innings of work and only allowed the one hit to Kanzler in his six innings of work. He improved to 1-1 on the season.
During the bottom of the second a 57 minute rain delay ensued and Bibler did not come back out to pitch. Ryan Woodring (North Greenville University) entered and pitched three scoreless innings.
Columbia broke through in the top of the sixth when Jose Soto hit an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1 and then Graham Saiko hit a two-run blast to make it 3-1 Blowfish.
Edenton managed just one hit, a Spencer Branignan (University of Pennsylvania) RBI single, from the third inning on against Adam Albers and Connor Sullivan, who both pitched in relief of Jones.
Columbia scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh and Saiko homered again in the top of the eighth, a solo blast to make it 5-1 at the time.
The Blowfish scored their final run on an RBI single in the top of the ninth, which scored Jarrod Reed who had moved to third on the Steamers fifth error of the night.
6-2 Columbia was the final as the Steamers backed into the top seed heading into the Petitt Cup Playoffs thanks to a 7-6 loss by the SwampDogs at the hands of the Wilson Tobs.
Woodring took the loss, his first of the season and fell to 0-1. Kanzler picked up his 31st RBI and Branigan picked up his 27th RBI of the season.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
