Morehead City Marlins News Release

HAMPTON, Va. - Trailing 4-1 through five innings, the Morehead City Marlins (23-29 overall, 13-12 second half) stormed back to a 7-6 win over the Peninsula Pilots (26-27-1 overall, 14-12 second half) for a ninth straight victory Tuesday night at War Memorial Stadium.

Trailing 6-4 heading to the seventh inning, the Marlins scored one run in the frame when Eric Peterson walked and Chace Mitchell was hit by a pitch. After Geoff DeGroot laid down a sacrifice bunt, Dalton Knight grounded in to a fielder's choice, scoring Peterson and cutting the Peninsula lead to 6-5.

Then in the eighth inning, Matt Anderson was hit by a pitch with one out. The following batter, Ryan Cranmer, lined a triple to right field scoring Anderson, and on the play Pilots shortstop Josh Silver threw errantly to third base, allowing Cranmer to score on the play and give the Fish a 7-6 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Pilots put two runners aboard with two outs, but Ben Fuchs nailed down his second save of the season, striking out Pilots' outfielder Josh Eldridge looking to end the game.

The Marlins scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning when DeGroot scored on a wild pitch. Peninsula answered with three in the bottom of the frame before scoring another in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. In the sixth inning, Reed Gordy knocked in a run with a single and Sal Annunziata tripled home a run to cut the lead to 4-3. The Marlins tied the game on a sacrifice fly from Matt Anderson before Peninsula scored two more for a 6-4 lead.

Marlins starting pitcher Matt Ogden (7-6) battled his way to a win, allowing six runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. Anthony Campanella (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in 1 1/3 innings of relief of Pilots starter Gunner Carroll.

The Marlins return home tomorrow when they take on the Wilmington Sharks in a doubleheader, with game one beginning in the bottom of the fourth to finish a suspended game from July 11. Country music band Love and Theft will perform a concert in between games and it's also Stuff the Buss Night presented by Communities in Schools. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: The nine straight wins ties a 2012 Coastal Plain League high as the Edenton Steamers began the season 9-0... Cranmer was 4-for-4 while DeGroot and Knight each had a pair of hits... The Marlins took the season series from Peninsula 5-3... It was Ogden's third win at War Memorial Stadium this season.
