FIREFLIES CAN'T HANG ONTO LEAD, LOSE 7-4: The Fireflies jumped out to a quick lead over Charleston, but couldn't hold on after a six-run sixth, falling 7-4 to the RiverDogs Saturday night at Segra Park. The turning point came in the sixth when Charleston's (76-31) first four runners made it to base safely. The inning began with a Tanner Murray double and a Matt Dyer homer, his first as a RiverDog. Next Garrett Hiott and Jonathan Embry had back-to-back singles before Johan Lopez hit an RBI knock to set the table for a two RBI double from Osleivis Basabe. Basabe finished the game 2-3 with a pair of walks. Diego Infante finished the inning with an RBI single, the hit made the score 6-3 as the RiverDogs scored a half dozen in the sixth. After Peyton Wilson extended his hitting streak to four games with a triple scorched to right-center in the seventh, Juan Carlos Negret singled to get the Fireflies (47-60) within a pair, but Charleston was able to answer in the eighth to go up 7-4 and close out the game.
WINNING WILSON: Second baseman Peyton Wilson was selected 66th overall in the second round of compensation selections in the 2021 draft. Wilson was known as a sure-fire fielder, but some question his ability to adjust and hit as well as he did in college in the professional rank and file. While in a Fireflies uniform, it has seemed as though those shouldn't have thought to question the Alabama-product. Wilson has at least one hit in each of his four games for Columbia and has an extra-base hit in each of his last three games, including a triple last night against Charleston. Wilson is hitting a perfect .400 in his short time at Segra Park.
CHALLENGING LEAGUE TOP MARKS: Fireflies outfielder Juan Carlos Negret has established himself as an all-or-nothing hitter during the 2021 campaign. The slugger leads the Low-A East League with 22 homers, which is the most in a single season in Fireflies history. He trails just Dash Winningham, who hit 25 homers between the 2016 and 2017 campaigns for the most all-time homers in Fireflies history. Negret has also done an excellent job at producing RBI this season. Despite having a sub-.200 batting average, Negret has driven in 74 RBI, which is good for the second-best in the league in the 2021 campaign. He only trails Charleston's Diego Infante, who has sent home 77 RBI for the RiverDogs this season.
OUCH TOWN AT SEGRA PARK: This series hasn't exactly gone the Fireflies way. Columbia has been outscored 8-1, 19-10, 15-2, 11-1 and 7-4 in the first five games against the RiverDogs. In each of the middle two ballgames, Columbia trailed 14-0 before scoring their first run against Charleston. All-in-all it's been a tough effort for Columbia, who has nine errors in the series to pair with an 8.40 ERA in these first four games. Despite one 10-run performance, the bats aren't doing well either. The Fireflies are 30-158 this series (.190). Last night, they went 1-5 with runners in scoring position to bring their series total to 5-30 (.167). Heading into the weekend, the Fireflies have been outscored 53-14 and will start two pitchers who have been on the roster for less than a month to close the series.
GOOD START FROM GUERRERO: Starting pitchers have been abused by the RiverDogs in this series, but in his Low-A East debut, Tyson Guerrero was able to work through 2.2 scoreless innings. While Columbia wasn't able to win the game, the start was enough to allow the Fireflies to jump out to a 3-0 lead, which amounted to their first lead of the series.
