San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts knew that they probably had to sweep the first-place Amarillo Dillas to clinch one of two first-half playoff spots in the league. And now, they are one win from doing just that, as the Colts blew out Amarillo Friday night, 12-2 before 1,864 at Foster Field.

For the second straight night, San Angelo (26-18) scored first against the Dillas (26-17). This time, the Colts got two runs in the first off Taylor Allen (4-3), as Andres Rodriguez hit an RBI groundout and Aaron Cone ripped a run-scoring double. San Angelo got one more in the second, and then broke the game open in the fourth. The first three batters of the inning reached, and then Bryan Frichter hit his second grand slam of the year, his fifth homer of the season, to left-center, and it was suddenly 7-0.

The Colts scored three more in the fifth, as Tyrone Pendergrass hit his fifth homer, and his first at home this year, and Andres Rodriguez doubled home two against reliever Eric Smith. Allen was tagged for nine earned runs in 4.1, and Smith went the rest of the way, allowing the other three runs.

Logan Williamson (6-2) threw his second straight complete game to give his bullpen a rest for the huge game on Saturday night, which is the first half finale. The lefty allowed two runs on 10 hits, striking out three and not walking a batter. He had thrown a complete game against Harlingen last Sunday in his previous start.

Pendergrass had four hits and three runs scored, while Anderson and Frichter each had three hits. Andres Rodriguez picked up three RBIs, moving his team-leading total to 47.

So the situation for the Colts in the series and first-half finale is simple. Win, and San Angelo will be assured of at least one of the two first-half playoff spots. Lose, and the Colts could find themselves out of the playoffs. If Alexandria loses tomorrow, the winner of the Colts-Dillas game would be first-half champion, but if the Aces win, only the Dillas could clinch the first-half title with a win, which would in turn eliminate the Colts from first-half contention.

Notes: Going into play tomorrow, the top three teams in ULB are separated by just one game in the standings, with the Dillas a half-game ahead of the Colts, who are a half-game ahead of the Aces...There was a 10-minute delay before the bottom of the seventh when one of the light banks at Foster Field went out, but the game resumed with one quarter of that bank being restored, and every other light being on. It was the first delay of any kind for the Colts this season...Jose Torres kept his on-base streak alive at 38, while Danny Bravo of Amarillo saw his end at 42- which was every game the Dillas have played this season.

The Colts finish their showdown with first-place Amarillo at Foster Field on Saturday, June 28. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., and the first 500 kids through the gates receive a youth baseball glove, sponsored by the U.S. Border Patrol and Fox 10 KIDY.
