San Angelo Colts News Release

LAREDO, Texas - For the second time in this three-game series between the San Angelo Colts (19-16) and Laredo Broncos (18-16), the team that fell behind early came back to win as the Broncos defeated the Colts 9-3 on Wednesday night at Veterans Field to even the series at a game apiece.

San Angelo is now just a half-game in front of Laredo for second place in the United League heading into the rubber match tomorrow. With the loss, the Colts were also denied their first four-game winning streak of the season.

The Colts grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead on Bryan Frichter's league-leading 23rd double that drove in John Anderson, who scored again in the third on an RBI double by Aaron Cone to make it 2-0. That was all the offense that right-handed starter Richard Bartlett (1-0) allowed in his first game as a Bronco. In five innings, Bartlett surrendered just four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

In the bottom of the third, Laredo took a 3-2 lead, a lead that they would never relinquish. Luany Sanchez hit an RBI double to get the Broncos on the board, and Colts starter Billy McKinney (0-2) allowed the tying run to score on a wild pitch. Santiago Guerrero then brought home Sanchez with an RBI groundout to put the Broncos on top. McKinney took the loss, allowing eight runs, six earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Laredo put up another three-spot in the fourth, though two of the runs were unearned. Ivan Reyes, who led off the inning with a walk, later scored on a wild pitch and Matt Lawman came home on a passed ball in the inning. The passed ball was on a dropped third strike, allowing Steven Wright to reach base, and he later scored on a double by Dwayne White to make it 6-3.

The Broncos had their third three-run inning of the night in the seventh when White hit a three-run homer to right field off lefty Justin Robinson. The Colts got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on Frichter's third hit of the night, an RBI single that chased reliever Justin Staatz from the game. Left-hander Rhett Barber, also making his Laredo debut, then entered the game and recorded all three outs in the seventh in addition to pitching the eighth and ninth innings to earn his first save.

The Colts conclude this quick road trip to Laredo at 7:30 p.m. CT on Thursday, June 19 before returning home for a brief homestand against Harlingen over the weekend. On Friday, June 20, there will be a Glow-in-the-dark logo baseball giveaway, sponsored by AEP and Suddenlink. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587.
