San Angelo Colts News Release
ALEXANDRIA, La. - Frank James won his second straight start, as the San Angelo Colts came back from a 3-2 deficit to beat the Alexandria Aces 10-5 at Bringhurst Field in a game starting Wednesday morning to take the finale of their three-game series and vault back over Alexandria into second place in the United League standings.
San Angelo (24-18) led 2-0 in the first inning, knocking out new Ace starter Robbie Wooley, who battled wildness and committed a throwing error. However, Alexandria (23-18) battled back, scoring three unearned runs to take a one-run lead into the fifth inning.
Aaron Cone tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single off Charlie Foster, who came on for the tiring Angel Guzman (1-3), before Jason Crosland hit a two-run double to give San Angelo a lead the Colts would not relinquish. Then, Jose Torres hit his third home run of the series, a two-run smash to center field, to make the score 7-3. Tyrone Pendergrass hit his second homer of the series and fourth of the season in the sixth, as the Colts held off a late Alexandria rally to win the game.
James (3-3) went five innings, allowed just three unearned runs, while striking out four and allowing seven hits. Chris Weast made his first appearance in his second stint with the Colts and struck out five in two scoreless innings, while Mitch Lively struck out three in relief of Ryan Mulle in the final 1.2 innings.
John Anderson had three hits for the Colts, while Bryan Frichter, Cone, and Jason Crosland each had two.
San Angelo now can win the United League first-half title outright with a three-game sweep of Amarillo at Foster Field this weekend. The Colts would clinch a playoff spot if they do at least one game better than Alexandria over the weekend. The Aces host Laredo Thursday-Saturday. Alexandria and Amarillo will also have one game, on July 2, count in the first-half standings.
Notes: All four of Pendergrass' homers are on the road, three of which were at Bringhurst Field. Pendergrass played with the Aces last season...All nine Colts hitters had at least one hit in the game...The Colts finished their scheduled morning games for 2008 at 2-2...Torres kept his on-base streak alive at 36.
The Colts conclude their first-half schedule beginning Thursday with a three-game set against first-place Amarillo at Foster Field. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. for Thirsty Thursday sponsored by Miller Lite and Foster Communications.
